If you people will look the board always past,and present, schedules three meetings a year out in the schools. One will be at Draughn in Dec,and either March or April there will be one at Ray Childers. This hasalways been done and I hope the board continues this tradition. No they did not schedule the Table Rock meeting to hide anything!
The radio announced that last night's meeting took SIX HOURS. My neighbor said that Barnyard went on for over an hour telling us that we can't fix a problem if we don't know what it is. She said that he and his video claim the reason our schools are in the "terrible" shape they are in is because we have LOWERED our expectations of our students. Because students are uncontollably poor, teachers need to focus on that which they CAN control - their teaching. Severe socio-economic conditions will not stop a child from learning, he says, but they will stop a teacher from teaching.
Gee, Mr. Barnard, if it takes a village to educate a child, how come the teacher must bear all the responsibility? The enthusiasm and intentionality to reach kids flows from the top down. Why don't you go BACK into the classroom and show us how it's suppose to be done?
Oh, I forgot. You had to LEAVE the classroom to be on the skool bored.
Lets give all students no lower than 60 on everything and then say to hell with it.It can improve dropout rates and improve overall self-esteem.It may trash test scores. But I think this has been going on for years and needs to be addressed by our Superintendent.

For your information the November 09 election consists of thre seats.Tracy Norman- western,Buddy Armour-central,Sam Wilkinson-eastern. Those are the seats up for grabs.Tim,Rob,Dave,and Karen will be there until November 2011. I want to clear up the stupidity of some who do not understand these are four year terms and the majority without Tracy still rests in Tim Buff's corner til 2011.You had better get a life if you hate it that bad.Some of us suffered under Ray Martinat,and Buddy Armour way to long.Now you know what it feels like. Mr.Burleson's contract runs out in june 2010.The board must give him so many days notice if they do not intend to renew his contract. I have a way around this wait til the day his number of days worth of notice is on its last day then terminate him. You would save a lot of money by not having to buy most of his contract out. How about a no zero policy, same thing as EVERY child MUST get an award at awards day, since when do we give an award for nicest smile, etc. just so everyone can feel good? They should get ONLY the grades they get and ONLY the awards they achieve, it all goes hand in hand...
There should NOT be a system-wide policy. Barnard is dead wrong. Whether incomplete work receives a 0 or a 60 should be left up to the site manager (principal) and the teacher(s).
Why? Because only a PRINCIPAL can retain or promote a child. That's the law. It has nothing to do with fairness. Since we know that in the learning game one size does not fit all, we should not insist on treating an intelligent but lazy kid like a struggling but hard-working kid. If neither kid turns their work in on-time or at all, I am not inclined to give BOTH children a zero.

Nothing makes a child "dumber" than a dumb example. "failure's" is not possessive, dumbass, but "systems" should be. I think you confuse what you believe to be "elitism" with people who have received and can demonstrate a sound, basic education. You obviously have not and cannot. Hell, you don't even know the plural of "policy". You see? That's what we regular folks are talking about. Our board majority and their rank and file are terrible examples of people not educated enough to oversee a school system. Let's see - teachers have a child for 10 months, then the child moves on.
Parents have the child for a lifetime.

Was anything mentioned about Assistant Principal Ralph Collette at the last school board meeting? Someone recently contacted David Burleson and several school board members requesting investigation into Mr. Collette's business. He is co-owner of several group homes in Burke County. The question raised was..Is it a conflict of interest for Mr. Collette to be one of the Principals dealing with discipline at Freedom High School and some of the clients of the group homes he has ownership in attending Freedom? He would possibly be the Principal in charge of their discipline, if required. Mr. Burleson indicated he would relay the information to the school attorney for review.

I am a great grandmother... What is happening to our country, and our Schools. i expect television to be full of filth... I don't expect our Burke County schools to require our children, to read filth. I was shocked when I heard of the content in some of the books our children are required to read. What is wrong with a society that sees nothing wrong with their children reading questionable materials before age 18. Is history repeating itself? What history you ask? Great Grandmother, I have to agree with you. It amazes me that we ask our youth to read filth, but if they use the same language in school, they're punished. Talk about a double standard - no wonder they're confused about what is right and wrong. The adults around them aren't even differentiating.
Libraries are full of amazing literature without questionable content. Any teacher worth his or her weight can teach from that text without a liberal lesson plan adopted from California.

1) There's nothing in the NC Standard Course of Study that requires a read that is profane, indecent, vulgar or demeaning.
2) There's already NCDPI policy for educator ethics: a) Specifically 16NCAC6C.602(5) b) Conduct with students. The educator shall treat all students with respect. The educator shall not commit any abusive act or sexual exploitation with, to, or in the presence of a student, whether or not that student is or has been under the care or supervision of that educator, as defined below: (A) any use of language that is considered profane, vulgar, or demeaning;
1) Books all contain language... 2) If an educator assigns a reading that meets the element of 5(A)it's the same as if they had spoken it to the child;
Teachers need to heed Article 15 of the NC State Constitution and the constitutional guarantee to every "child of the state" to a "sound basic education". If educators push the limit on readings, and "sound" is defined as "not profane, indecent, vulgar or demeaning" the teacher will find themselves in a situation where they have violated a child's "state civil rights" and there are no defined limits for damages.
If educators choose to disregard the language of established policy, and the constitutional law regarding the rights of children and their education you're in for a rude awakening.
NCDPI violated the constitutional rights in the Leandro case. Google it. Now they've got Judge Howard Manning watching every move they make.

Did anyone attend the Oct. 20 school board meeting? What is God's name is wrong with Rob Harifield? Can he not make a comment without shaking and screaming at people? His attack of Mr. Armour was uncalled for. All Mr. Armour said was that he would like to see the monies for Draughn and Patton come out of the fund balance since it was a one time deal. Mr. Sherrill stated that he felt that the $48,000.00 ($24,000 for each school) would be a one time deal. Consequently, the board could use the Article 39 money for raises for teachers. After Mr. Armour made this statement, Mr. Hairfield flew into a rage.
It is obvious that that there is no love lost between Hairfield and Armour, but this attach was uncalled for.
If Hairfield continues to act like this, the school attorney should repremand him. So many parents are concerned about what their children are exposed to. This behavior is appalling! He also comes out in public and states how much he disliked Brackett and accuses a man that is not their to defend himself of leaving a mess for the board to fix. Hairfield is a very sick man in more ways than one.
So parents, if you don't want your children exposed to a sick, rude, and hateful man that says whatever comes to mind, keep your children away from him. I really feel that he should be banded from going to any of the schools and talking to our children.
I hear Mr.Brackett left because there was 600,000 un accounted for dollars missing and the auditors are looking for it.If this is true indictments should follow.I couldnt believe he would not wait his contract out.Now as for what Mr.Hairfield said it may have been out of line but,If Randall tried to sue it would probably backfire on him.To many worms could come out of the can.

This man came literally off the street and finally, only by chance, got elected to an office. The sad part is that the office he was elected to is of most importance to this county. He is in a position, as are all board members, that answers to no one. They call the shots and even get to take shots at Mr. Burleson, if they choose to do so. If they had half the education of this man, they might be able to pull off holding a position of this status. I agree....as a parent I do not want Rob Hairfield any where near my children. He is a ticking time bomb....as a parent I cannot even listen to the audio minutes if my children are in the room because you can hear Rob Hairfield repeatedly mutter "thats bullshit" when others speak. Same for Cox. He got a 6% raise and $6000 in travel to come. But he's being held to his contract as well. All this great hiring, but no service! With all the money your new board was going to save on salaries plus the 59% travel increase (you foolishly published THAT fact on your website when you published your budget!) they gave themselves, we hope you can afford to stay in business and there's something left with which to educate your kids.

On the other hand, it's a tough road to travel when you're not one of the favorites. This is old news, but still a great example. Students' money went missing from the East Burke High School locker room. Students who were eager to catch the culprit(s) set up a hidden video recorder. To everyone's surprise, a coach was filmed rifling through lockers by himself. Explanations of cash receipts and dates of deposits for shoe payments were varied and inconclusive. The minutes show that the coach's actions were discussed in closed session; then our former school board voted (5-2) in open session to formally express its satisfaction with all investigations that there was no evidence of criminal activity, regardless of what the videotape showed. The coach later resigned on the condition that the board could no longer formally discuss or investigate the matter any further. (Oh, by the way, the coach's daddy was the associate superintendent at the time and his father-in-law was the personnel director at the time). Not once did we read a quote in The News Herald from our superintendent that, by golly, we could count on him to have a meeting with the principal involved to get to the bottom of this issue. Our superintendent said he would check with the sheriff's office to find out if they investigated anything, and he also said he did watch the videotape of the incident. But we won't read in the board's minutes of his determination for holding the coach or anyone in the BCPS organization accountable ... because, accountability wasn't exactly in his line of thinking. This is but one example among many of our school administration's lack of accountability for those protected by our superintendent.

Mrs. Shanda McFarlin is another one of Burleson's elite... Yesterday Harry Ferree, recently voted "most inspirational teacher" by Patton students, was allegedly fired by THE Shanda McFarlin. . . When is Burleson going to realize that Patton High School (aka Patton Place) has lost many highly respected, highly qualified, effective teachers because of an unqualified, highly unprofessional principal? Mr. Ferree probably stood up to Mrs. McFarlin for something she was doing that was unjust, unfair, or simply unreasonable, and like others before him, was dismissed or forced out. When will Mrs. Shanda McFarlin, or any of her "cronies" at Patton High be held accountable? Students deserve a principal that spends less time caring about herself and her personal agenda and more time caring about their education.

His darkest hour was and is the Billy Anderson case. He and Mrs.Lowman should have been hit with obstruction of justice for threatening children.If no other crime was committed,then this one was.A principal in South Carolina was charged with obstruction when her cheerleading coach had gave alcohol to minors.The principal told the girls if they talked they would be punished with in school suspension and up to dissmissal from school. The authorities arrested the principal and took her home computer as well as school computer.Oh, how lucky David and Rexanna are. Some say drop this story, Why? It took place Billy Anderson told the board it could not do anything, and I believe in an effort to make it go away the board accepted.Look who voted for it,Tim and all the incumbents that year.Makes you wander. Horse hockey! No children were ever threatened. The tellers of that tale say that the gag order came in the form of an email to ALL 105 teachers from Mrs. Lowman. Yet no teacher ever saw such an email. And of over 100 alleged recipients of said alleged email, it appears that ALL were erased - even off the dedicated email server! Now you would think at least one disgruntled employee at EBHS would have kept that email on his or her own hard drive as leverage against the boss. But there WAS no gag order or threat. Burke's school superintendent and sheriff have differing accounts about whether an investigation was conducted into locker-room thefts and a hidden-camera video made by students at East Burke High. Burke's Board of Education voted to exonerate a coach of any wrongdoing in the matter, citing in part a local law enforcement investigation.
Sheriff John T. McDevitt says his office has not investigated.
East Burke High School students made the video on Nov. 29 in hopes of catching someone taking money from student clothing, says Superintendent of Burke County Public Schools David Burleson.
Burleson and East Burke Principal Rexanna Lowman say a hidden video camera captured head basketball coach Billy Anderson on tape, alone, patting down student clothes. Burleson says the tape was turned over to a school resource officer employed by the sheriff's office. He also says the sheriff's office was requested to conduct an investigation to determine whether a crime was committed.
"The Burke County Sheriff's Department kept the videotape for several weeks, and to my knowledge conducted what it deemed to be an appropriate investigation," Burleson wrote in an e-mail.
He says the sheriff's office reported back to Burke schools that no evidence of a crime had been found.
McDevitt says no deputies in his office have watched the video. "We've had no report from any victim regarding any larceny of money associated with a video at East Burke's locker room," he says.
McDevitt says that without a report, his office has no reason to investigate an incident.

Although, on the book situation, having studied other system's policies and school systems in other states policies, we are way behind the times on this issue. Many school systems will not allow certain books to be used as forced classroom assignments,but do make all books including the BIBLE available in their library.So that means they are getting around having to be accused of Book Banning. So if our administration as well as board would make this a policy we would be done with this crap. If you people will look the board always past,and present, schedules three meetings a year out in the schools. One will be at Draughn in Dec,and either March or April there will be one at Ray Childers. This hasalways been done and I hope the board continues this tradition. No they did not schedule the Table Rock meeting to hide anything!

The radio announced that last night's meeting took SIX HOURS. My neighbor said that Barnyard went on for over an hour telling us that we can't fix a problem if we don't know what it is. She said that he and his video claim the reason our schools are in the "terrible" shape they are in is because we have LOWERED our expectations of our students. Because students are uncontollably poor, teachers need to focus on that which they CAN control - their teaching. Severe socio-economic conditions will not stop a child from learning, he says, but they will stop a teacher from teaching.
Gee, Mr. Barnard, if it takes a village to educate a child, how come the teacher must bear all the responsibility? The enthusiasm and intentionality to reach kids flows from the top down. Why don't you go BACK into the classroom and show us how it's suppose to be done?

Lets give all students no lower than 60 on everything and then say to hell with it.It can improve dropout rates and improve overall self-esteem.It may trash test scores. But I think this has been going on for years and needs to be addressed by our Superintendent.

I can only imagine what it would be like if these so-called "bunch of clowns" (school board members) ran our schools........TOTAL DISASTER!!!Mr. Burleson is the only professional, educated person of the whole bunch! We have got to get rid of these "stugges" that sit up there and try to look smart, that is a job within itself. For your information the November 09 election consists of thre seats.Tracy Norman- western,Buddy Armour-central,Sam Wilkinson-eastern. Those are the seats up for grabs.Tim,Rob,Dave,and Karen will be there until November 2011.
I want to clear up the stupidity of some who do not understand these are four year terms and the majority without Tracy still rests in Tim Buff's corner til 2011.You had better get a life if you hate it that bad.Some of us suffered under Ray Martinat,and Buddy Armour way to long.Now you know what it feels like. Mr.Burleson's contract runs out in june 2010.The board must give him so many days notice if they do not intend to renew his contract. I have a way around this wait til the day his number of days worth of notice is on its last day then terminate him. You would save a lot of money by not having to buy most of his contract out. To Buddy's social elite friends who champion his stupidity, David is going like it or not!

How about a no zero policy, same thing as EVERY child MUST get an award at awards day, since when do we give an award for nicest smile, etc. just so everyone can feel good? They should get ONLY the grades they get and ONLY the awards they achieve, it all goes hand in hand...
There should NOT be a system-wide policy. Barnard is dead wrong. Whether incomplete work receives a 0 or a 60 should be left up to the site manager (principal) and the teacher(s).
Why? Because only a PRINCIPAL can retain or promote a child. That's the law. It has nothing to do with fairness. Since we know that in the learning game one size does not fit all, we should not insist on treating an intelligent but lazy kid like a struggling but hard-working kid. If neither kid turns their work in on-time or at all, I am not inclined to give BOTH children a zero.
You are fence riding and that is what has been wrong with our system and Superintendent.Whether I like a decision or not I respect someone who takes a stand.
I can not always agree with Mr.Barnard,or Mr.Hairfield but at least you know where they are coming from and I believe most of the changes we have seen are because of them and Tracy at times.

Nothing makes a child "dumber" than a dumb example. "failure's" is not possessive, dumbass, but "systems" should be. I think you confuse what you believe to be "elitism" with people who have received and can demonstrate a sound, basic education. You obviously have not and cannot. Hell, you don't even know the plural of "policy". You see? That's what we regular folks are talking about. Our board majority and their rank and file are terrible examples of people not educated enough to oversee a school system. Fifth-graders, thanks to Armour and previous boards, can at least articulate and spell better than you flunkies.

Let's see - teachers have a child for 10 months, then the child moves on.
Parents have the child for a lifetime.
Parents make children "dumb", with low expectations, lack of involvement, inconsistent rules, and displacement of blame.
And, let's be honest - if 2 folks with a 72 IQ have a child.....he/she will most likely not be a rocket scientist. He/She can however be successful in life. This is a good argument for the 0 policy.
How about….. the Board act like a group of adults and work on POLICY, not micromanaging. For a person who has lived in the real world for some time, this is transparent.
Some of these folks were NEVER "leaders" of anything. They now have some power, but lack the training or intelligence to use it effectively. At this point, I think the best outcome would be damage control.
Hire competent teachers (if you can find some that will teach in Burke)
Keep veteran administrators who have a proven track record of STUDENT success
Weed out slackers (top to bottom)
Put the children first

Was anything mentioned about Assistant Principal Ralph Collette at the last school board meeting? Someone recently contacted David Burleson and several school board members requesting investigation into Mr. Collette's business. He is co-owner of several group homes in Burke County. The question raised was..Is it a conflict of interest for Mr. Collette to be one of the Principals dealing with discipline at Freedom High School and some of the clients of the group homes he has ownership in attending Freedom? He would possibly be the Principal in charge of their discipline, if required. Mr. Burleson indicated he would relay the information to the school attorney for review.
No more a conflict than when Steve Demiter owned apartments and rented them to teachers that came from Steve recruiting them.Think about that one!

I am a great grandmother... What is happening to our country, and our Schools. i expect television to be full of filth... I don't expect our Burke County schools to require our children, to read filth.
I was shocked when I heard of the content in some of the books our children are required to read. What is wrong with a society that sees nothing wrong with their children reading questionable materials before age 18. Is history repeating itself? What history you ask? Read your Bible you will find the history I am speaking of. Shame on those that would encourage such books... and God Bless those that would fight to keep their children safe from such filth.

Great Grandmother, I have to agree with you. It amazes me that we ask our youth to read filth, but if they use the same language in school, they're punished. Talk about a double standard - no wonder they're confused about what is right and wrong. The adults around them aren't even differentiating.
Libraries are full of amazing literature without questionable content. Any teacher worth his or her weight can teach from that text without a liberal lesson plan adopted from California.

1) There's nothing in the NC Standard Course of Study that requires a read that is profane, indecent, vulgar or demeaning.
2) There's already NCDPI policy for educator ethics:
a) Specifically 16NCAC6C.602(5)
b) Conduct with students. The educator shall treat all students with respect. The educator shall not commit any abusive act or sexual exploitation with, to, or in the presence of a student, whether or not that student is or has been under the care or supervision of that educator, as defined below:
(A) any use of language that is considered profane, vulgar, or demeaning;
1) Books all contain language...
2) If an educator assigns a reading that meets the element of 5(A)it's the same as if they had spoken it to the child;
Teachers need to heed Article 15 of the NC State Constitution and the constitutional guarantee to every "child of the state" to a "sound basic education". If educators push the limit on readings, and "sound" is defined as "not profane, indecent, vulgar or demeaning" the teacher will find themselves in a situation where they have violated a child's "state civil rights" and there are no defined limits for damages.
If educators choose to disregard the language of established policy, and the constitutional law regarding the rights of children and their education you're in for a rude awakening.
NCDPI violated the constitutional rights in the Leandro case. Google it. Now they've got Judge Howard Manning watching every move they make.

Did anyone attend the Oct. 20 school board meeting? What is God's name is wrong with Rob Harifield? Can he not make a comment without shaking and screaming at people? His attack of Mr. Armour was uncalled for. All Mr. Armour said was that he would like to see the monies for Draughn and Patton come out of the fund balance since it was a one time deal. Mr. Sherrill stated that he felt that the $48,000.00 ($24,000 for each school) would be
a one time deal. Consequently, the board could use the Article 39 money for raises for teachers. After Mr. Armour made this statement, Mr. Hairfield flew into a rage.
It is obvious that that there is no love lost between Hairfield and Armour, but this attach was uncalled for.
If Hairfield continues to act like this, the school attorney should repremand him. So many parents are concerned about what their children are exposed to. This behavior is appalling! He also comes out in public and states how much he disliked Brackett and accuses a man that is not their to defend himself of leaving a mess for the board to fix. Hairfield is a very sick man in more ways than one.
So parents, if you don't want your children exposed to a sick, rude, and hateful man that says whatever comes to mind, keep your children away from him. I really feel that he should be banded from going to any of the schools and talking to our children.

I wholeheartly agree with you regarding Rob Hairfield. He is not a man of integrity, morality, intelligent, nor does he bathe very often. This man came literally off the street and finally, only by chance, got elected to an office. The sad part is that the office he was elected to is of most importance to this county. He is in a position, as are all board members, that answers to no one. They call the shots and even get to take shots at Mr. Burleson, if they choose to do so. If they had half the education of this man, they might be able to pull off holding a position of this status. But, of course, they don't; far from it!And lets not leave out Mr. and Ms. Buff and their lack of education. Let's see, Tracy has a GED and I think Tim did make it through the 12th grade. Congrats! But this is an example of what the people of Burke County voted for and exactly what they got, an un-educated bunch of clowns. I'm proud to say I didn't vote for either!!! Remember this when you go to the poles to vote this November....the importance of the background, training, experience of the candidates. He is a ticking time bomb....as a parent I cannot even listen to the audio minutes if my children are in the room because you can hear Rob Hairfield repeatedly mutter "thats bullshit" when others speak. This behavior needs to be stopped!! If Tim Buff was a decent chairperson he would stop this rather than letting it get out of hand at board meetings. Of course Tim Buff doesn't have a clue how to run a meeting - an his side kick vice chair is the laughing stock of the county.

Tim is no worse a chairman than Ray was.Ray only gave you two minutes to speak as a public citizen.Tim gives you five.Tim probably runs the meetings for the most part pretty good. Jerry Yoder use to run off at the mouth,smoke a cigar at ballgames on school property,cuss umpires like a sailor and tell people he was a board member there is nothing they could do about it.Bill Simmons was chairman then. Artie Logan screamed at ballgames as a board member and threatned teachers when her children did wrong.Her youngest is in jail now at the Burke County jail. Board members at times overstep their bounds.The chairman should reprimand them. I want Buddy Armour to explain why he carried a concealed weapon to board meetings in a school zone and at a county facility? Rob needs to calm down and so does Buddy.They should reserve such for closed sessions.Rob has not yet screamed profanity's at ballgames and threatned teachers so he is better than some. Bringing a gun to a school board meeting is a Class H felony. So let the issue raise its head. Let all of us see the proof. Your knowledge of the law is pitiful. If your subject were as mentally ill and as chemically dependent as you claim, he would have never received his CCW. Isn't it ironical that Mr. Hairfield's driving record prevents him from being employed by the school system and volunteering in the school system but not from being on the school board?

David Burleson has a way of influencing who gets principal of the year.Doug Rhoney is deserving of it.Rexanna's may have been pay back for the EB matter. When the board was talking about bringing Rick Sherrill back,Rob Hairfield mentioned that Rick was principal of the year.David Burleson responded that it was not that big a deal,he had been principal of the year a couple of times.Was he serious it was not that important? Or,was it some way to talk them out of bringing Rick back? Rob Hairfield's response to David Burleson after his comments, I guess we need to do away with it if it's not important.David was silent. Morale of the story. Two morale's actually. One, be careful what you say it could come back to haunt you,Two, David is not as smart as he thinks he is.

And Rhoney had no right to express himself about Buff before the election? Apparently not, because Buff paid him back by denying him DHS. But the Buff-ools will reap the whirlwind of the "people". If Rhoney gets a better offer, he's gone - just like all the rest. Remember, your leader told your paper they ALL got better offers. Even Dr. Smith got a better offer -despite what your information may say.
What isn't wrong is that your brilliant board paid Smith's replacement $30,000 more than Catawba County paid her. $30,000 more! What a raise (45%!). And she has no experience with hardware OR software beyond NC WISE. And your Man couldn't persuade her school system to release her from her contract early.
Same for Cox. He got a 6% raise and $6000 in travel to come. But he's being held to his contract as well. All this great hiring, but no service! With all the money your new board was going to save on salaries plus the 59% travel increase (you foolishly published THAT fact on your website when you published your budget!) they gave themselves, we hope you can afford to stay in business and there's something left with which to educate your kids.
So I guess given YOUR standards and considering YOUR limited experience, you did pretty well hiring these people.

I know how to access public information, and I know how to pick up a telephone and call. Dr. Smith's total compensation package far out-distances his old contract. Plus all of the students at Mooresville City will soon have lap-tops.
His number of machines and servers to maintain and service are a fraction of Burke County's. His budget is generous and his BOE doesn't micro-manage. The Lt. Governor-soon-to-be-Governor is delightred he is still on her state technology committee. I don't think your new gal is on any state technology committee. The Mooresville system and BOE cannot believe you fools pushed him and half his team out. But they're glad you did.

A graduate of Appalachian State University with an EDS. in Administration, Mr. Burleson, an Avery County native, high school valedictorian and Magna Cum Laude honoree, came to Burke County in

He served as assistant principal of that school from l989 through 1991 until becoming the principal of what was then Oak Hill Junior High School. He returned to Freedom as principal in l992 and remained in this capacity until moving into the associate superintendent’s position in l996. Mr. Burleson became superintendent in 2000 and has been a pioneer in education from pre-k to grade twelve and beyond. Under his leadership, the school system recently was awarded the prestigious National Magna Award of Excellence for its pre-k mobile education on wheels. This is old news, but still a great example. Students' money went missing from the East Burke High School locker room. Students who were eager to catch the culprit(s) set up a hidden video recorder. To everyone's surprise, a coach was filmed rifling through lockers by himself. Explanations of cash receipts and dates of deposits for shoe payments were varied and inconclusive.
The minutes show that the coach's actions were discussed in closed session; then our former school board voted (5-2) in open session to formally express its satisfaction with all investigations that there was no evidence of criminal activity, regardless of what the videotape showed.
The coach later resigned on the condition that the board could no longer formally discuss or investigate the matter any further. (Oh, by the way, the coach's daddy was the associate superintendent at the time and his father-in-law was the personnel director at the time).
Not once did we read a quote in The News Herald from our superintendent that, by golly, we could count on him to have a meeting with the principal involved to get to the bottom of this issue. Our superintendent said he would check with the sheriff's office to find out if they investigated anything, and he also said he did watch the videotape of the incident. But we won't read in the board's minutes of his determination for holding the coach or anyone in the BCPS organization accountable ... because, accountability wasn't exactly in his line of thinking.
This is but one example among many of our school administration's lack of accountability for those protected by our superintendent.

Mrs. Shanda McFarlin is another one of Burleson's elite... Yesterday Harry Ferree, recently voted "most inspirational teacher" by Patton students, was allegedly fired by THE Shanda McFarlin. . . When is Burleson going to realize that Patton High School (aka Patton Place) has lost many highly respected, highly qualified, effective teachers because of an unqualified, highly unprofessional principal? Mr. Ferree probably stood up to Mrs. McFarlin for something she was doing that was unjust, unfair, or simply unreasonable, and like others before him, was dismissed or forced out. When will Mrs. Shanda McFarlin, or any of her "cronies" at Patton High be held accountable? Students deserve a principal that spends less time caring about herself and her personal agenda and more time caring about their education.

"At the school board meeting on Monday, Nov. 18, Chairman Tim Buff and board member Karen Sain implied that there was a conspiracy, among those who spoke in support of the literature being taught in the Humanities courses at Freedom and Patton high schools, to suggest that the board supported "book banning" when it had never indicated that.
Board member Tracy Norman also stated that none of Mr. John Zimmerman's students used the word "ban," but Mr. Tim Fossett's students did.
The implication, by Buff, Norman and Sain, was that Mr. Fossett had directed his students in some manner to use the word "ban."
Let us clear up where these impressive young students and others in the community may have gotten that impression.
At the Feb. 18 board of education meeting, Tracy Norman was on the agenda to speak about "The Kite Runner." The board of education minutes, which are published on line, state that she "shared her concerns of the graphic scenes and obscene language that were depicted in 'The Kite Runner.' Ms. Norman shared that she felt that the inappropriate language in the book went against some of the policies that Burke County Schools currently have in place. Ms. Norman requested support of the other six board members in having the book 'pulled' from the schools in Burke County."
The minutes continue, "Mr. Armour shared his concerns of 'book banning' and the exposure that could bring. Ms. Norman shared that she didn't feel the redeeming value of the book outweighed the negative impact."
We want to share with the community and the board where these profoundly impressive students may have gotten the impression that some members of the board are supportive of banning books.

His darkest hour was and is the Billy Anderson case. He and Mrs.Lowman should have been hit with obstruction of justice for threatening children.If no other crime was committed,then this one was.A principal in South Carolina was charged with obstruction when her cheerleading coach had gave alcohol to minors.The principal told the girls if they talked they would be punished with in school suspension and up to dissmissal from school. I heard one of the students may come forward and tell what all went down that day and surrounding days. Horse hockey! No children were ever threatened. The tellers of that tale say that the gag order came in the form of an email to ALL 105 teachers from Mrs. Lowman. Yet no teacher ever saw such an email. And of over 100 alleged recipients of said alleged email, it appears that ALL were erased - even off the dedicated email server! Now you would think at least one disgruntled employee at EBHS would have kept that email on his or her own hard drive as leverage against the boss. But there WAS no gag order or threat. There WAS no obstruction. If you've got evidence to the contrary, PRODUCE IT!

Yeah. If it were true, there's not a kid at that school who, if so threatened, wouldn't jump at the chance to nail a principal to the wall. Or are North Carolina teens that much different from South Carolina teens? I don't think so.
This is just some "tool" hoping to divert attention away from the real crime: operating a working camera in a locker room, reproducing and showing the contents to third parties without the subjects signing a waiver.
When Rexanna called teachers from their planning period and told them not to talk about it,and they needed to support Billy that was obsurd. Any body else would have been fired on the spot. When David Burleson and Ray Martinat lied against the sherriff department,and DA's office that was the real crime.But wait it was for the establishment and that is ok if David says so. Burke's school superintendent and sheriff have differing accounts about whether an investigation was conducted into locker-room thefts and a hidden-camera video made by students at East Burke High.
Burke's Board of Education voted to exonerate a coach of any wrongdoing in the matter, citing in part a local law enforcement investigation.
Sheriff John T. McDevitt says his office has not investigated.
East Burke High School students made the video on Nov. 29 in hopes of catching someone taking money from student clothing, says Superintendent of Burke County Public Schools David Burleson.
Burleson and East Burke Principal Rexanna Lowman say a hidden video camera captured head basketball coach Billy Anderson on tape, alone, patting down student clothes. Burleson says the tape was turned over to a school resource officer employed by the sheriff's office. He also says the sheriff's office was requested to conduct an investigation to determine whether a crime was committed.
"The Burke County Sheriff's Department kept the videotape for several weeks, and to my knowledge conducted what it deemed to be an appropriate investigation," Burleson wrote in an e-mail.
He says the sheriff's office reported back to Burke schools that no evidence of a crime had been found.
McDevitt says no deputies in his office have watched the video. "We've had no report from any victim regarding any larceny of money associated with a video at East Burke's locker room," he says.
McDevitt says that without a report, his office has no reason to investigate an incident.
"There is a group that is going to see this man goes down!"

Although, on the book situation, having studied other system's policies and school systems in other states policies, we are way behind the times on this issue. Many school systems will not allow certain books to be used as forced classroom assignments,but do make all books including the BIBLE available in their library.So that means they are getting around having to be accused of Book Banning. So if our administration as well as board would make this a policy we would be done with this crap. It is the only thing David Burleson and Buddy Armour can use at this time to rally their troops in unison against the board.How pathetic. The real issue should be letting the person who could have stopped this all along,go. David Burleson. Why has Mike Kenney and Rexanna Lowman been able to escape the book fiasco? One, it probably would not fly in the Eastern end because those people would come un-glued. Second, maybe the teachers figured out a way to educate the kids by not forcing such crap down the students throats. Third, maybe the teachers are not in Burleson's gameplan to save his behind.Four, maybe the teachers just thought about what could happen with certain material being taught in the classroom. This is still high school not college.I ask the many students who graduated and went on to rewarding careers without reading this material after becoming adults,do you feel traumitized by not being exposed to such reading material?
