She walks out a lot at board meetings.She should have stayed for the public comments or told that she had to step out.I know that Buddy Armour is pushing this to the hilt.Buddy you remember when you tried to nail her a year ago.Do you not think somehow this will come bak around? The New Herald has been up Tracy's backside from the start. The way they reported the June 9th meeting you would think that they weren't even in the building.
The worst part of this whole "New Board" is they are turning everything in to a running drama grab for attention. And Tracy Norman is the main one. She seems to look for anything that can get her some publicity. The map discussion needs to be addressed, Tracy's behavior, and the Fab 5 need to be addressed. When the public speaks they deny it and basically tell people that they wrong. We elected them, and now some of them think that they are not accountable, and can do as they please. They say they are representing us and looking after what is best for our children. But, the parents have no voice in things. The public has no voice. I have heard the tapes, I did not go to the meetings, but I have kept track of things that were said. I find it funny that the minutes have not been posted on the web in a long time. I know the previous board made mistakes, but sometimes the demon you know is far better than the one you don't.

Burleson is going to try to drag out naming an associate superintendent.He will try not to recommend Rick Sherrill which he thinks will make the board look bad when they shoot down all his other reccommendations.I would put his back against the wall on this issue.The Board needs to hire a Human Resource Director, an Attorney sooner than not,and hire someone for Exceptional Children and hopefully a new Technology Director. Before Christmas we need a new Superintendent.

I wasn't at the Board meeting, but I have seen the sign up sheets from other meetings. The sign up sheet is not a document that requires a signature. For instance, if I wanted to speak at the meeting, and I was running a little late, I could call a friend who was already there to sign me up. No harm, no foul. No conspiracy. (OK, maybe there is a conspiracy, but nothing illegal going on between the speaker and the person who signs him/her up)

These board members do not even know the proper way to hold a meeting. Tim kept saying he was going to hear the appeals in closed sessions. David corrected him the first time saying that they are going to decide eligibility not appeals. Tim, Appeals are what you hear after the first decision has already been heard.

I thank you also Steve... I myself can not verify all that is written here. But I can believe all I see and hear for myself. With that being said... I believe more of the stuff against Mrs. Norman, Mr. Buff and those labled the Fab 5 than the comments against Buddy Armor, and Burleson. I have seen and heard not only the things that they say at the meetings and how they act, but how they treat the public. How they behave in public. I watched them at a Graduation and they acted in public like they really did not want to be there and that it was a waiste of their time. I have heard the rudeness in their voices and desrespect as they have talked to people who addressed the board. The School Board should be leaders of the community and lead by setting examples. I have not seen this new group do that. I do find it interesting though that when I checked to opinions on line, since the June 30th meeting... there has not been the letters from the public I expected. But people seem to be blogging a lot here about it. I was glad I found this site.
More and more people are finding out about this blog everyday, I give instructions as to how to get to it several times a week. People are interested and more so they are interested in the truth. I have read this blog for a while, and I do try to keep up with the news from back home, primarily because I do have family members in the school system. But to be honest with you poeple, you have to start thinking broader. Get out of Burke county and live a little, and no I don't mean going to Hickory to the mall and movies. You really have a very limited view of the world if this school board issue is making you this mad. If you don't like the administration or school board, why not use it as an educational experience and teach your kids to overcome the obstacle. To exceed regardless of which idiot is elected. That's where you need to get to, otherwise you are creating a sense of entitlement for your kids or a crutch that they can always lay blame on the 'elected' officials for their problems. They will carry that lesson for the rest of their lives and always blame 'the man' for keeping them down. That is BS. thank you for that explanation. I do not walk with a chip on my shoulder, and there are many things that i do not know or give the impression that I know them. Life is about learning, and I learn something new everyday myself. Why do I keep tabs on what happens? I have neices and nephews that live in burke county. I was born and raised there, and yes I did leave. I realize there are people who do not wish to leave, and that is fine, I have no faults with you for that. my first post was harsh, so I apologize to those that were offended, but everything I have read on this blog people attack, name calling etc. It's childish, and I just got caught up in it myself.
But my main point I hope at least a few people take away is that regardless of where you go, who you interact with, you will meet people who you do not like or agree with. However, they all have some valid points and opinions as well. What I am reading on this blog leads me to believe that there are people hell bent on disagreeing with everything a particular side says, just because they don't like that person. That action in itself is a negative environment in which my nephews and neices have to go to school in. The arguing on the school board among members of BOTH parties is out of control. It's childish and doesn't accomplish anything in the long run but breed anger, resentment, and negativity.
I think we can all agree that there is shady politics in both camps. I hope that the board and community can come together, regardless of city lines, district maps, or school districts.
I went to Freedom. I was not a popular kid or a rich kid. I focused on education and looked past the high school years. David was my principle for a year while I was there, and he was great. I knew of the school board, but where the rubber met the road was my parents belief in me and the teachers that I had.
All of that and 1.50 will buy you a Coke. What I hope will happen is that you teach the kids an appropriate way to disagree with someone, and then how to excel past whatever hurdles you think they have. Keep the focus on the kids, support the teachers, and keep the politics out of the classrooms. Let them argue about district maps (another whole story there), Principles etc. After David left, we had one of the worst principles in the History of BCPS, and yet that which didn't kill us only made us stronger.
I do not think everyone from Burke County is dumb, but if I were an outsider and planning to move back to Burke County, I would have real issues with the education system from what I read. I know it is only half the story, but as a community I would be concerned about the perception that is given about the education.
That is all I am going to say. I appreciate those who have listened and I do hope that one day there will be a decision to agree to disagree and move forward.

I can't help but wonder if this latest round of threats and fortune telling are going to be any more accurate than the accusations that the Draughn principal job was about who would hire Hodges as BBall coach. Remember the great political fix that was slung about here. You don't really hear much about that anymore. Draughn still has no coach. Remember what a sure thing this was? To Basketball Blogger: You're right, all of those people that speculated about the coach were wrong. It's probably just a huge coincidence that the boys basketball coach has STILL NOT been named. I guess people around here don't really care about boys basketball, right? After all, they have named football, girls BB, baseball, softball, volleyball, cheering, etc. So, why do YOU think they haven't named the boys BB coach? Could it be b/c Kelly Rhoney called them out in the paper and if they follow through with the deal, they know it will just prove her point? Just a question to ponder...

Well...I am guessing that Mike(the guy that was selected because he would hire Hodges) hasn't been able to find anyone to take it. What I do know is that he didn't hire Andy as was promised here again and again and again. This was a sure thing but yet it didn't happen.

I believe David Burleson is a Godly man. In fact, I believe Tim Buff is a Godly man. I don't walk in either of their shoes, so I am not judging them in their respective roles. I do not know Tracey, personally, but I believe that she, in fact, has values and morales about her as well. It takes great courage to run for a local goverment seat. It takes courage to have one's life open to the public's eye. All the board members are patriotic and knit our American web link together. They support our government, our freedoms, our independance and our American way. If we as a people choose ro start tearing apart our boards, we have also chosen to tear apart America. It's okay to disagree, but let us remmember we have a common red, white and blue thread that our forefathers's timely courage gained for us.

To me, "working behind the scenes" is still pretty general. What exactly is he doing? As a teacher, I could tell you that your child is acting up in class,(general statement)or I could say your child is shooting rubber bands across the room at other students during class.(specific) Which statement gives you the most information?
This is ridiculous. Why would anyone keep “secret” files at the central office? I worked in the system for quite a while; left for a neighboring county because Burke’s pay stinks. People in the system have a lot more to do that meet in corners and hide files. Get in the real world. Seems folks are mad at David Burleson for personal reasons – did “Johnny” really have to be expelled when he brought his pot to school? Burleson - I’ve seen. him hand crazy parents his cell and home phone numbers and tell them to call whenever they need him AND MEAN IT. His compassion for the neediest population is unsurpassed. Does he make everyone happy – of course not. No good leader does. Is he seen all around the county showing support for programs AFTER HOURS. Yes he is. Did you ever see Tony Stewart out and about other than in Morganton? Let’s think back to those skirt chasing days. Burleson is leading this county in the right direction. Scott Smith – wiry isn’t he? He (and the previous board) understands that technology is necessary for competition in the modern times. Do we really need to work a computer for the local grocery store…no, how about to get your GED….just a little will do…..but if you want to compete, you better have some computer skills. To get that you need a sound technology department. Get off his back – mad because you can’t get him to cave aren’t you? Burke is lucky to have his skill set. Morganton - Burke's school superintendent and sheriff have differing accounts about whether an investigation was conducted into locker-room thefts and a hidden-camera video made by students at East Burke High. Burke's Board of Education voted to exonerate a coach of any wrongdoing in the matter, citing in part a local law enforcement investigation.
Sheriff John T. McDevitt says his office has not investigated.
East Burke High School students made the video on Nov. 29 in hopes of catching someone taking money from student clothing, says Superintendent of Burke County Public Schools David Burleson.
Burleson and East Burke Principal Rexanna Lowman say a hidden video camera captured head basketball coach Billy Anderson on tape, alone, patting down student clothes. Burleson says the tape was turned over to a school resource officer employed by the sheriff's office. He also says the sheriff's office was requested to conduct an investigation to determine whether a crime was committed.
"The Burke County Sheriff's Department kept the videotape for several weeks, and to my knowledge conducted what it deemed to be an appropriate investigation," Burleson wrote in an e-mail.
He says the sheriff's office reported back to Burke schools that no evidence of a crime had been found.
McDevitt says no deputies in his office have watched the video. "We've had no report from any victim regarding any larceny of money associated with a video at East Burke's locker room," he says.
McDevitt says that without a report, his office has no reason to investigate an incident.

I would advise you to call the sheriffs office. The news herald went to him BEFORE the tape was given. I personally called and found out it was a news herald timing in their stories to look bad. The New Herald has been up Tracy's backside from the start. The way they reported the June 9th meeting you would think that they weren't even in the building.

The worst part of this whole "New Board" is they are turning everything in to a running drama grab for attention. And Tracy Norman is the main one. She seems to look for anything that can get her some publicity. The map discussion needs to be addressed, Tracy's behavior, and the Fab 5 need to be addressed. When the public speaks they deny it and basically tell people that they wrong. We elected them, and now some of them think that they are not accountable, and can do as they please. They say they are representing us and looking after what is best for our children. But, the parents have no voice in things. The public has no voice. I have heard the tapes, I did not go to the meetings, but I have kept track of things that were said. I find it funny that the minutes have not been posted on the web in a long time.
I know the previous board made mistakes, but sometimes the demon you know is far better than the one you don't.

I think one of the bloggers got angry when I mentioned the skull duggery to get Richard Avery's name signed upon the sheet when he was late and it was already on the board's desk.Now another thing is Tim Buff allowed him to speak, and I remeber Ray Martinat saying he did not want people coming in at the last meeting of the year and speaking.This was when the argument was over public comments.Back to the fraud, Did David Burleson,Buddy Armour, or Arick Gordon sign Richard Avery up to speak?There was no way he could have himself and someone has forged his name and this should be dealt with at the retreat.Burleson has a habit of wanting to get people there to bash this board. 1 - Tracy doesn't need anyone to help "make Tracy look bad". She's doing a fine job of that herself
2 - Brackett and Draughn - I'm not a fan of Brackett, but what in the world has he had to do with Draughn? The design is by an architect, the work by a reputable company...have you seen him carrying a tool belt lately?
3 - David insubordinate? Don't think so. Insubordinate means disobedient to authority. You have no clue who signed the paper...that would make David insubordinate how?

I beleive that people can have meetings and discuss things with out approval of others, and need no ones permission to do so. I think we can all figure out who is blogging that you can not. I was not aware of this meeting.... but I am now... and I find being told that I can not exercise my right to do so offensive... and all the more reason to do it. So give up Tracy... we know when you blog... and if anything it just shows how childish and insecure you are. Face the facts that people are upset and are using this as a forum to express their opinions... We the people, does not mean we the board members who are offended by public comments.

Burleson is going to try to drag out naming an associate superintendent.He will try not to recommend Rick Sherrill which he thinks will make the board look bad when they shoot down all his other reccommendations.I would put his back against the wall on this issue.The Board needs to hire a Human Resource Director, an Attorney sooner than not,and hire someone for Exceptional Children and hopefully a new Technology Director. Before Christmas we need a new Superintendent.
I say if Burleson can be hired by another system what trade do we need to make.Do it like the Nfl,or Nba draft. But if he could have gotten one he would have been gone. If he was wanted bad enough they would have made it happen.He is not.Now a small school system who does not know better maybe,but never a large one. So the whole map issue, the issue with the book and the way this board represents itself is not on topic anymore...we are bashing Burleson... well then I really would be surprised if he or anyone on the board or in this world for that matter is a sqeaky clean, Mr. Upright, honest and unself serving individual. But, I have had 2 kids go through BCPS and do not think that his crimes are near to the blatant extent of some of the current board members. I wasn't at the Board meeting, but I have seen the sign up sheets from other meetings. The sign up sheet is not a document that requires a signature. For instance, if I wanted to speak at the meeting, and I was running a little late, I could call a friend who was already there to sign me up. No harm, no foul. No conspiracy.

I thank you also Steve... I myself can not verify all that is written here. But I can believe all I see and hear for myself. With that being said... I believe more of the stuff against Mrs. Norman, Mr. Buff and those labled the Fab 5 than the comments against Buddy Armor, and Burleson. I have seen and heard not only the things that they say at the meetings and how they act, but how they treat the public. How they behave in public. I watched them at a Graduation and they acted in public like they really did not want to be there and that it was a waiste of their time. I have heard the rudeness in their voices and desrespect as they have talked to people who addressed the board. The School Board should be leaders of the community and lead by setting examples. I have not seen this new group do that.
I do find it interesting though that when I checked to opinions on line, since the June 30th meeting... there has not been the letters from the public I expected. But people seem to be blogging a lot here about it. I was glad I found this site.
More and more people are finding out about this blog everyday, I give instructions as to how to get to it several times a week. People are interested and more so they are interested in the truth. You can find out all you want on this blog and most of it seems to be truthful. With that, the only thing I have to add it that David Burleson is the only person sitting on the board that is professional, qualified, leads a christian life, represents himself as a leader and educator, and has more than enough smarts to be on the school board. I have read this blog for a while, and I do try to keep up with the news from back home, primarily because I do have family members in the school system. But to be honest with you poeple, you have to start thinking broader. Get out of Burke county and live a little, and no I don't mean going to Hickory to the mall and movies. You really have a very limited view of the world if this school board issue is making you this mad. If you don't like the administration or school board, why not use it as an educational experience and teach your kids to overcome the obstacle. To exceed regardless of which idiot is elected. They will carry that lesson for the rest of their lives and always blame 'the man' for keeping them down. That is BS. The blogger at 8:50pm did make some good points. I have to agree with him that we should be thinking and asking our kids what they want to do in 5-10 years. I ask my kids that all the time.

thank you for that explanation. I do not walk with a chip on my shoulder, and there are many things that i do not know or give the impression that I know them. Life is about learning, and I learn something new everyday myself. Why do I keep tabs on what happens? I have neices and nephews that live in burke county. I was born and raised there, and yes I did leave. I realize there are people who do not wish to leave, and that is fine, I have no faults with you for that. my first post was harsh, so I apologize to those that were offended, but everything I have read on this blog people attack, name calling etc. It's childish, and I just got caught up in it myself.
But my main point I hope at least a few people take away is that regardless of where you go, who you interact with, you will meet people who you do not like or agree with. However, they all have some valid points and opinions as well. What I am reading on this blog leads me to believe that there are people hell bent on disagreeing with everything a particular side says, just because they don't like that person. That action in itself is a negative environment in which my nephews and neices have to go to school in. The arguing on the school board among members of BOTH parties is out of control. It's childish and doesn't accomplish anything in the long run but breed anger, resentment, and negativity.
I think we can all agree that there is shady politics in both camps. I hope that the board and community can come together, regardless of city lines, district maps, or school districts.
I went to Freedom. I was not a popular kid or a rich kid. I focused on education and looked past the high school years. David was my principle for a year while I was there, and he was great. I knew of the school board, but where the rubber met the road was my parents belief in me and the teachers that I had.
All of that and 1.50 will buy you a Coke. What I hope will happen is that you teach the kids an appropriate way to disagree with someone, and then how to excel past whatever hurdles you think they have. Keep the focus on the kids, support the teachers, and keep the politics out of the classrooms. Let them argue about district maps (another whole story there), Principles etc. After David left, we had one of the worst principles in the History of BCPS, and yet that which didn't kill us only made us stronger.
I do not think everyone from Burke County is dumb, but if I were an outsider and planning to move back to Burke County, I would have real issues with the education system from what I read. I know it is only half the story, but as a community I would be concerned about the perception that is given about the education.
That is all I am going to say. I appreciate those who have listened and I do hope that one day there will be a decision to agree to disagree and move forward.

Well...I am guessing that Mike(the guy that was selected because he would hire Hodges) hasn't been able to find anyone to take it. What I do know is that he didn't hire Andy as was promised here again and again and again. This was a sure thing but yet it didn't happen.

I believe David Burleson is a Godly man. In fact, I believe Tim Buff is a Godly man. I don't walk in either of their shoes, so I am not judging them in their respective roles. I do not know Tracey, personally, but I believe that she, in fact, has values and morales about her as well. It takes great courage to run for a local goverment seat. It takes courage to have one's life open to the public's eye. All the board members are patriotic and knit our American web link together. They support our government, our freedoms, our independance and our American way. If we as a people choose ro start tearing apart our boards, we have also chosen to tear apart America. It's okay to disagree, but let us remmember we have a common red, white and blue thread that our forefathers's timely courage gained for us.
I have asked before and I now ask again...please list for us the reasons you think Mr. Burleson does not do a good job. You always list gereralities and not specifics. Give us concrete examples so that we may understand your reasons for wanting him removed.

This is ridiculous. Why would anyone keep “secret” files at the central office? I worked in the system for quite a while; left for a neighboring county because Burke’s pay stinks. People in the system have a lot more to do that meet in corners and hide files. Get in the real world. Burleson - I’ve seen. him hand crazy parents his cell and home phone numbers and tell them to call whenever they need him AND MEAN IT. His compassion for the neediest population is unsurpassed. Does he make everyone happy – of course not. No good leader does. Is he seen all around the county showing support for programs AFTER HOURS. Yes he is. Did you ever see Tony Stewart out and about other than in Morganton? Let’s think back to those skirt chasing days. Burleson is leading this county in the right direction.
Scott Smith – wiry isn’t he? He (and the previous board) understands that technology is necessary for competition in the modern times. Do we really need to work a computer for the local grocery store…no, how about to get your GED….just a little will do…..but if you want to compete, you better have some computer skills. Morganton - Burke's school superintendent and sheriff have differing accounts about whether an investigation was conducted into locker-room thefts and a hidden-camera video made by students at East Burke High.
Burke's Board of Education voted to exonerate a coach of any wrongdoing in the matter, citing in part a local law enforcement investigation.
Sheriff John T. McDevitt says his office has not investigated.
East Burke High School students made the video on Nov. 29 in hopes of catching someone taking money from student clothing, says Superintendent of Burke County Public Schools David Burleson.
Burleson and East Burke Principal Rexanna Lowman say a hidden video camera captured head basketball coach Billy Anderson on tape, alone, patting down student clothes. Burleson says the tape was turned over to a school resource officer employed by the sheriff's office. He also says the sheriff's office was requested to conduct an investigation to determine whether a crime was committed.
"The Burke County Sheriff's Department kept the videotape for several weeks, and to my knowledge conducted what it deemed to be an appropriate investigation," Burleson wrote in an e-mail.
He says the sheriff's office reported back to Burke schools that no evidence of a crime had been found.
McDevitt says no deputies in his office have watched the video. "We've had no report from any victim regarding any larceny of money associated with a video at East Burke's locker room," he says.
McDevitt says that without a report, his office has no reason to investigate an incident.

I would advise you to call the sheriffs office. The news herald went to him BEFORE the tape was given. I personally called and found out it was a news herald timing in their stories to look bad.

That was the purpose of the valdese meetings. And guess what - David is clear. Of everything they we have heard (rumors) of.
