addressed the board concerning the recent locker room thefts at East Burke High School. She shared a concern with the lack of information from the school administration and school board. If there was an investigation, she feels this information should be made public.
Dan Chiz also addressed the locker room thefts at the school and questioned how this was investigated. He mentioned the many rumors in the community about this and the lack of information from the administration. He mentioned several questions which he would like answered.
Comments from Mr. Martinat on the incident that occurred in the locker room at East Burke High School ~
Thefts in locker rooms have occurred forever. Locker room thefts occurred at East Burke High School. Students set up a video camera in the locker room during a PE class. School administration and the school resource officer took possession of the video and turned it over to the Sheriff's Department. Representatives from the Sheriff's Department viewed the video and determined no crime was committed on the video. He indicated the person on the tape stated he was looking for something that had been stolen from him. The professionals that viewed the tape felt this was the case. Sheriff McDevitt indicated he did not feel a crime was committed on the tape. The video is now in the possession of one of the parents of the students involved. Many rumors are everywhere. This incident may not have been handled properly and for that, I apologize. An investigation was done by proper officials and the school is trying to remedy thefts from occurring in the locker rooms. Thefts in schools happen. We need students' help to prevent this from happening. The school is considering assigning teachers in the locker rooms. The school is trying to protect students' possessions while they are at school.
Mr. Chiz asked if any action had been taken against the teacher involved. Mr. Martinat responded that the teacher was questioned and the incident discussed with him. The teacher also had money taken and was in the locker room looking for it. He added it was not a wise decision for the teacher to search the locker room without another adult present, but that was the reason given by the teacher for being in the locker room. Mr. Chiz remarked that the teacher should not have been searching through private things by himself and this should be addressed properly. Mr. Martinat stated law officials viewed the tape and felt there was no crime committed. Mr. Martinat admitted the individual should not have handled this the way he did.
Mr. Buff shared his concern that there had not been a board meeting since December 4 and although he had seen emails concerning this incident and thought the board members would get together collectively to discuss the incident, this did not happen. He felt all board members should have been privy to information concerning the incident. He spoke directly to the DA and the Asst. DA and they stated they had not seen the tape, nor had they been asked to view the tape. Mr. Martinat responded that would have to be taken up with the Sheriff because he thought they had looked at the tape. Mr. Buff asked the superintendent to contact the Sheriff's Department and obtain any reports from this investigation. Mr. Buff asked the superintendent if he had seen the tape and he answered that he had seen the tape.
Mrs. Norman stated she spoke to Sheriff McDevitt on December 22 and was told he had not watched the video, but he facilitated a meeting between Mr. Burleson, John McDevitt, Assistant DA, and SBI agent, and the only reason he (McDevitt) had the tape was to keep it in safe-keeping in their evidence locker. Sheriff McDevitt told her no investigation had been completed by the SBI, the Sheriff's Department, or the District Attorney because no report had been filed. He said if a report was filed by a parent or a student, he would refer it to the SBI for an investigation. If an investigation had been done by any of these agencies, Mrs. Norman state she would like to receive copies of those reports.
Mr. Burleson will speak to Sheriff McDevitt and find out what their findings were from the investigation. Mr. Martinat again stated the Sheriff indicated he did not feel a crime was committed on the tape and the Sheriff requested that the family that owned the tape to come pick it up.
Mr. Buff said at the beginning of this incident there was some discussion about getting an outside agency to investigate this and wondered if this was a possibility. Mr. Martinat stated the board could bring a motion to do whatever they chose to do. He would first like to contact the Sheriff's Department to see what they did or didn't do.
Mr. Buff also shared a concern with an email that was sent to several other board members referencing some "vigilante board members" and asked if any of the other board members would care to explain what was meant by the email. He requested that the board deal with the incident at East Burke collectively, and not as individuals.
Summary from Mr. Martinat ~ Will speak to Sheriff's office to see who he is aware of that viewed the tape, what their findings were, and if they have a written report to submit to the board. If so, it will be shared at the next board meeting.

I think you forget...the Billy Anderson fiasco is the real reason you idiots voted in this moron board we have now. And that is the reason they want to get rid of David Burleson. They didn't like the way he had to handle the situation. Billy should have stepped up and admitted his guilt and then maybe the current board would not be in charge. Maybe the above blogger should wake up to the reality of this.
The real problem with the locker room theft is the coach should have been smart enough not to leave a large amount of money lying out (or in) his desk. Whenever money is collected in school, for any reason, it should be immediately receipted and turned in to the office. None of the whole "East Burke Locker Room Theft" mess would have happened. I agree with 3:49. The guy should have just stepped up and said, "I'm sorry I lost several hundred dollars of the school's money. I'll be more responsible next time." and then worried about who or what happened to it afterwards. Sure, it's a serious offense to mismanage funds in public schools, but I would have replaced the missing money out of my own wallet to compensate before I went snooping around in students' belongings looking for it.

There will be a special meeting of the Ashe County Board of Education held at the central office annex Thursday at 7 p.m.
School officials say the purpose of the meeting is to vote on the new superintendent.
