Nov 16th Editorial

In the November 16th paper edition of the News Herald there is an editorial titled, "Left up to some of you, super, assistant wouldn't have jobs"

Here is what the editor chose to publish...

"Begin thorough, un-announced financial audits"

"Eliminate David Burleson and Randall Brackett"

"...Procedure for randon drug testing and would like faculty and staff to be included in drug testing"

"New football coach for FHS"

"Fire Randall Brackett"

"Fire David Burleson"

"Fire Steve Demiter"

Teachers need to be tested for drugs and fire the administrators. This chicken little, the sky is falling bullshit is getting old. I have come to learn that the news herrald doesn't let facts get in the way of thier agenda.

Percent of students at or above grade level on ABC's EOG reading test

Percent of students at or above grade level on ABC's EOG math test

Keep telling the people this crap and it will become true and that will be on your head Cheryl E. Moose.

Buff: Burleson's Job is Safe

Tim Buff: Burleson's job is Safe

Finally here is my take...

"Buff said neither he nor other board members he knows of have any intentions of getting rid of Burleson or anyone else in the Central Office.
He credits rumors of the instability of certain jobs to cheap shots against him and the other new board members."

Gonna have to call you out on this one.

Lets look at how you voted for some of the administrators. I believe Tim voted against the following contracts

Andy Anderson
Randall Brackett
Scott Smith
Steve Demiter
Susan Pollpeter

And from the comments...He voted AGAINST every principal and assistant principal hired who wasn't from Burke County - just because they were not from Burke County. It's all on tape. It's all in the minutes.

I would love to know the actual dates, please leave a comment if you know them.

Rob Hairfield is quoted in http://www.charlotte.com/228/story/340088.html

"A financial audit; replace the director of finance (associate superintendent Randall Brackett). Focus on education, not job creation. Promote effective discipline. Cut excess and waste."

and

"Change the finance director -- hire a real business manager."

Then you havehttp://www.burkecountync.net, a site maintain by Hairfield and Larry Thurston. This site mentions removing Scott Smith and David Burelson.

"If Smith can't handle his administrative job and feels that he must react disrespectfully to proper scrutiny, he should be replaced with a person who can measure up to the job. Smith's unlimited travel allowance warrants total scrutiny."

And

"Then the new School Board should as the first order of business say: "Mr. Burleson You're Fired!""

Cheap shots my ass, Tim Buff. You say you want an open board, lets have it. We are calling your bluff.

Also from Tim Buff, "Employees do need to be accountable for their actions and realize they work for the school board."

This quote pisses me off and I think it will piss a lot of teachers off. You have also kept saying we need to get back to educating the children. Unless you plan on getting your college education, you need to back off the professional educators and let them do their job. The media selection policy shows you don't trust them. Keep threatening them and they will go to districts where they can "work for the students" and not "work for the school board".

Tracy Norman Hates EBHS

EBHS Softball lights

Mr. Brackett’s recommendation is to award the bid to Seagle Electric for $48,711. He reminded the Board that EBHS would be responsible for $20,000 making the cost for BCPS $28,711. Mr. Brandon asked for a review of the minutes regarding the amount that EBHS was to pay for lights. Mr. Brackett confirmed that whatever amount was previously written in the minutes was the correct amount that EBHS had committed to pay, with the remainder being paid by BCPS.

Mr. Wilkinson made a motion to award the bid to Seagle Electric, with a second from Mr. Simmons. The Motion carried with six (6) ayes. Ms. Norman opposed.

Ms. Norman questioned the statement on the bid tabulation concerning awarding the bid when funds were available. Mr. Brackett responded by stating that the bid tabulation had been given to him by Mr. Stroupe, Capital Projects Manager for BCPS, and he had informed Mr. Stroupe that the county couldn’t proceed with their normal procedure of awarding bids, that the bid would have to be approved by the Board before the bid could be awarded. Ms. Norman then questioned whether or not the money was available now. Mr. Brackett confirmed that the money is available now. Mr. Brandon asked how long it would take for the lights to be installed. Mr. Brackett responded by saying that it would take 60 days from start to finish. Mr. Brackett went on to say that it may not take that long but we needed to allow a 60 day period. Mr. Martinat clarified that the net to the school system would be under $30,000 and Mr. Brackett confirmed.

Ms. Norman asked about the list of needs. She questioned if this had been looked at to determine priorities vs. other needs in other schools. Mr. Brackett replied that he didn’t receive that list; that it had gone to Mr. Burleson, who then distributed it to the facilities committee.

Mr. Simmons responded that this list would be discussed at the next Facilities and Finance Sub Committee Meeting. He added that at that time they would bring a recommendation back to the Board of how to prioritize the list of needs.

Mr. Brackett mentioned that Burke County anticipated having about $900,000 in lottery money that could go toward debt payment on our COPS Program and then use the sales tax money and appropriate that for other capital needs.

Mr. Buff questioned Mr. Brackett as to how long the bid would be good for.

Mr. Brackett responded that typically bids are good for 30 days.

The Motion carried with six (6) ayes, Ms. Norman opposed.

I will admit the need for $40,000 softball lights is debatable. But this sounds like a grudge towards EBHS? What do you think?

Truthiness

Truthiness is a satirical term that U.S. television comedian Stephen Colbert created in 2005 to describe things that a person claims to know intuitively or "from the gut" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

How many times have I heard the newly elected school board members talk about refocusing on education and how bad our drop out rate its. Too much. Their fix, we need new administration.

Well they have said it so much that it has become truthiness. Tim Buff ran a great campaign and got relected on truthiness. It was so good it got Karen Brittain Sain elected too.

Today news herald there are two things that show the administrators are focused on education.

Drop out rate falls and a letter to the editor defending David B. I would give you the link, but that section of morganton.com is not showing up.

Comment worth posting

This was a comment worthing of posting...

I've read this article several times, and here are a few comments that I would like to make:

Karen Brittain Sain: As a nurse, she is entrusted with patients' lives. As a board member, she'll be entrusted with students' lives.

This is a self-glamorizing statement. It is overkill and over-the-top.

Mr. Buff was asked: What will you do to restore respect to the board and the school system? He said: Continue to be accountable to the school system and the community; to be accountable and open and above board.

This is just a nothing statement directed at both the administrative and the classified levels as being ineffective.

Mr. Hairfield was asked: What will you do to provide support for the superintendent and principals? He said: Focus on accountability. There is ample money in the system to reallocate to principals to make sure they have the necessary resources. This will eliminate the need for student fundraisers.

What you say, Mr. Hairfield, is actually true - there is plenty of total money - but what you don’t understand or know is that there will never be a clean and efficient distribution of that money. School districts have little ability or total control – they are restricted by state, federal, and local laws – of how to allocate those funds. I’m sure our finance people do the best they can and firing Randall Brackett is not the answer, as much as you would like it to be.

But let’s not stop there – let’s be bold and list a few of the jobs that should be eliminated, like, One currently being advertised, EC Health Information Manager: What the heck is this?? We have OT’s, PT’s, Psychologists, Speech Personnel, Physical Educators, Behavioral Specialists, Interpreters, and now School Nurses. I’d like to know why this position will exist and for what purpose. It sounds to me like a job trying to be squeezed in before the new board takes its place.

Safety Director. Why do we need a Safety Director to send out 8x10 brochures telling us to be careful not to trip and fall in the winter, to turn out the lights and to remember to close the doors? Who actually reads the paperwork that comes from this particular office? And what’s the percentage of staff that then lie by signing our names to those questionnaires indicating that we do read them? Surely, Mr. Burleson wouldn’t mind attaching this information to a few of his current emails that he sends out to everyone, in effect accomplishing the same thing, and being more effective, efficient, and less wasteful of paper resources, in his approach!

Mr. ID Badge-Taker/Photographer: Why not put capable machines into the schools that secretaries or principals can use to create a badge for each of their faculty? And, equipping each school with a few cameras would take care of getting enough pictures. These are not hard things to do.

And finally, to address your comment about the need to eliminate student fundraisers-For years and years it has long been the battle cry, and is as common as the day is long, of incoming politicians to espouse the cause of cutting student fundraisers. Lots of people want to cut them out. It is a point stated all over the country all of the time. Why? Because it plays well with parents who hate fundraisers, teachers who get tired of handing out the packets, and all staff who see money wasted on frivolous things, such as paying board members or hiring unneeded positions or even, in some people's minds, purchasing textbooks that aren’t needed because everything is online these days. Do you really think that smart, highly educated and qualified teachers and principals would hold fundraisers in the first place if they weren’t needed? The fact is, they are needed and they do produce funding in order to help children’s education.

As a matter of fact, I'd like to see a list of the fundraisers, festivals, wreath and plant sales, bake sales, book fairs, voucher sales, restaurant discount booklets, cow patty bingo runs, raffle sales, dinner theatre sales, BBQ sales, the number of times that parents were asked to donate and why, how much money is made from yearbook sales, drink and food machines throughout the district, etc., along with a description of each, the total amounts that each one brought in PER SCHOOL for 2006-2007 and to date for the current school year as well.

Let’s also take a look at the number of charity events district-wide that have been asked of employees to do. How much money was brought into the district from those that students and staff were asked and encouraged to solicit for? What profit and time were in those?

In one of your previous letters to the Herald, Mr. Hairfield, you said, "This board, time and again, has snubbed their nose at the people once they were elected and have cow towed to anything the administrators say." Well, now's your chance. I'm the people, Sir and Ma'am! Please don't snub your nose or cow tow to me.

Hello, Board…you out there?

Rob Hairfield: Teachers are the most important profession because without teachers, there are no other professions.

You forgot the part about firing Randall Brackett

Karen Brittain Sain: As a nurse, she is entrusted with patients' lives. As a board member, she'll be entrusted with students' lives.

WTF, do you know what a platform is. how did you get elected? Watch out Tracy, Tims got a new girl.

David Barnard: He is running on fixing the dropout rate and creating a strategic plan to achieve goals.

Nice goal, can't really argue to much just hold you accountable. Lots of folks will be watching.

Tim Buff: The schools are doing a good job, but there is room for improvement. The board needs to work with the community and the principals and assistant principals.

too bad your actions don't match your words.

David Barnard Bio

Birthplace: Des Moines, Iowa.

oh no, you are not a home grown boy, don't tell Tim

About him: David Barnard said his wife thinks he's crazy. So do most of his friends

No arguments from me

Those goals were sparked in part by a year, two years ago, spent teaching seventh-grade science in the Burke County schools. During that time, he said, he was "appalled" by the administration's approach to middle school education; it was more important, he said, for kids to have high self-esteem than to learn anything.

I love these type of people, do something for a year and they are experts. I have seen you mention your "extensive" education experience. In my education experience i learned that extensive doesn't mean one year. I have heard that year didn't go so good. If anyone knows anything more concrete, please leave a comment.

He said he's hoping to apply experience from his corporate career to the school system. "In business, you have to look at the problems you have within the company and decide whether to scrap or solve (them and) come up with new ideas," he said. "I feel that could be my role."

Big difference between business and education. Business is all about the bottom line. A lot of money is spent on kids with special needs who don't qualify for a diploma. You can't scrap them.
How do you plan on measuring profit?

he would encourage greater parental involvement in the schools and listen more to community members and teachers. Burke County has excellent teachers, he said, and they need more support dealing with disruptive students.

Solid answer, you will be held accountable.

He also advocates better money management and questions whether two new high schools were necessary. He favored building one large, new, centrally located high school and using other money to fix outdated educational facilities, including overcrowded elementary schools and outdated high school science labs.

That must be your business side... Student preform better in smaller settings, surpirsed you didn't learn that in you extensive education work.

Rob "DWI" Hairfield bio

About him: A longtime Burke County schools observer and candidate in three of the previous four board elections, Hairfield said he's running to restore credibility, integrity and accountability to the board.

I can't think of a better way to restore credibility and integrity than to elect someone with not one but two DWI charges. Read for yourself

As a school board member, what would be your top priority?
"A financial audit; replace the director of finance (associate superintendent Randall Brackett). Focus on education, not job creation. Promote effective discipline. Cut excess and waste."

I appreciate the bluntness, I really do. Do an audit and replace the associate superintendent. What happens if the audit doesn't prove your "job creation" and "excess" and "waste" conspiracy theory. Sounds like i was wrong about the bluntness, it is a personal vendetta. But as long you say its for the burke county children, you are in the clear right?

the rest of your bio is not bad, but don't think I am going to be easy on you. You have years of crazy letters to the editor. I can't wait.

tim buff bio

Education: Diploma, East Burke High School, 1977.

attaboy finished high school. I hear if you combine your GPA with tracy's you all have a 4.0

"I work for the people of this county, and if I have questions, I'm going to ask them. I have asked some hard questions (and) brought the people's business to open session. "

You may be able to dish them out but can you handle them...What were you and Tracy doing hiding in the back corner of J&S?

"Continue building a bridge of trust by improving communications and relationships with the board, staff, students and community."

Relationships with the board. Wink wink reading you loud and clear.

If elected, what - if anything - would you change about the Burke County Public Schools? Are there things you believe the school system can or should be doing differently?
He recommends doing more to reduce the dropout rate, looking for ways to increase salary supplements for certified employees and begin paying supplements to classified employees and paying more attention to "growing our own" teachers and hiring them and others "based on their qualifications, not who they are connected to."

Growing our own teachers and hiring them based on their qualifications. So a qualificaiton would be born and raised in Burke County. Hmm, that sounds like hiring "who they are connected to."

Karen BRITTAIN-sain Bio

Let's examine karen BRITTAIN-sains bio.
http://www.charlotte.com/228/story/340088.html

Education: Diploma, East Burke High School, 1980; associate's degree, Western Piedmont Community College, 1982; bachelor's degree in nursing, Lenoir-Rhyne College, 1994

At least she has a bachelor's degree, better than a grocery store manage and his cashier.

About her: Before last fall's East Burke locker room incident, Sain had never been to a school board meeting, she said. But that changed after what she describes as the school system's mishandling of the situation, which affected a young relative and, she said, deeply divided the surrounding community.

Great, you elected a school board member who for her entire life didn't care about the school system until a single incident. She is right, this incident did divide the community. Becuase tim buff and tracy norman wouldn't let it go.

Why are you running:"The future of the Burke County Public Schools is important to me." As a mother of four girls, two of whom are still in school, she said, she has a personal stake in that future -- and feels the majority of the current board has lost its focus on it.

So now the future of the schools is important, but it wasn't when your first two were in school. You sound like a puppet, did TB write that for you.

If elected, what - if anything - would you change about the Burke County Public Schools? Are there things you believe the school system can or should be doing differently?
She recommends supporting continued and improved vocational and technology programs, including testing to identify students that may not be able to go on to higher education after graduation. "Many of us know how difficult it is to find a plumber, heating and air technician, auto mechanic, all of whom make $40-plus per hour. Also, Burke County has a booming health care system with new cancer and wound care centers, all of which will need to be staffed by trained individuals who are now part of our public school system." She also supports equitable, across-the-board employee pay raises.

Yeah more testing, if you didn't just get involved with your kids education, you would know we already have those tests. Please explain why it is difficult to find a plumber, heating and air, and auto mechanic, I just look in the phone book. You really need to get involved and realize how many of those classes are offered at the high schools. As for the health care stuff, i prefer my care givers to have a degree and not just a diploma. Raises sound great, but i guess since you are new to caring about the schools you are new to politics too. The state house, seneate and gov set the budget and raises. But thanks for playing

Black Wednesday

The election results are in and burke county has made a huge mistake. Taking new seats on the school board are Karen BRITTAIN-sain, Rob Hairfield, and David Barnard. Tim Buff is back to his old seat, so expect the same old tricks.

We are looking forward to seeing these screw ups try to run a school system.

First question, who is going to be the chair. I am putting my money on the grocery store manager. What do you think?
