I was there. The turn-out of Draughn citizens was good. The ones that spoke - they all spoke eloquently.

Buff orchestrated an unprecedented meet-and-greet moment for Mike Kenney before the public comments. He was visibly uncomfortable. In jusifying the "new board's" principal decision, Buff reminded the citizens present that they (the citizens) were not privy to ALL the information that board members are privy to - leaving the impression that the board had knowledge of wrong-doing about Ms. Lowman and Mr. Rhoney. Wilkinson and Armour asked Buff to elaborate on these things that the "whole" board was allegedly aware of. Buff said that he would not get into a public debate involving personnel issues.

So if I were either principal, I would want to be publicly exonerated after such a public slam.

These are our elected school leaders. What a shame.

I listened to the meeting last night. I'm sorry, but can Barnard be in stupider?? He spent our tax dollars attending "School Board 101" in Raleigh. Based on this class he gave a "presentation" of what authoirty the board has. Hey Dave- this info is posted on the BCPS web and it's FREE!!! It's too bad Raleigh doesn't offer "Common Sense 101". Now that would be $ well spent! To publically state Mr. Rhoney "would have been in way over his head" is BEYOND ignorant. (I can only imagine Sam Aycock's reaction to that comment) But that wasn't as bad as him telling Mr. Emmerly that he is out of his mind!! That's OK, Mr. Emmerly. I applaude your comments and must be out of my mind too!!

Tracy Norman's comments to speaker Ron LaSalle were out of line, to say the least. To openly flirt with a speaker and make comments about dating/kissing and telling....AT A BOARD MEETING!!! Was that an attempt to make Tim jealous? Tracy you are a disgrace to our community and our children. As a parent if my child had been in the audience I would demand a public apology. But I guess parenting skills are not your strong point since your child is already in the court system with numerous charges.

Word on the street is that Draughn High might have an assistant principal/AD by the end of this week or early next week. If this is true, does anyone have any thoughts to who it might be? Hopefully, someone with ties to the community who might help with the healing process!

Anonymous said...

I am sure the AD/Assistant Principal has already been decided by select board members....and I am sure Andy Hodges is soon to follow....I think it will be a long time before the healing process begins...especially since it is quite obvious that Mike Kenney was involved with the "set-up" - having lunch with Tim Buff before the principal was announced...what is that all about???

Wasn't there an athletic booster club meeting tonight. Anyone go?

Anonymous said...

At the board meeting on Monday night Mr. Buff so boldly stated that "his phone number is public" and anyone could call him...I believe his statement was "put your money where your mouth is." A sign was then displayed in the community with his phone number and Mr. Buff whinned until the sign had to be removed. Now to you Mr. Buff, "put your money where your mouth is!!!"

At the booster club meeting, Mr. Kinney did say an assistant principal/AD would be named soon. Talked about letting the students choose what the mascot would look like. The group expressed their wishes to have varsity football this fall. Kinney said the club would have imput into who the coaches would be.(will see about that) Rest was routine booster club stuff.

Why should Mike Kenney be manipulated by you people and resign? All he did was apply for a job. And why don't you grow up. The decision has been made. Get behind him and support him. It is not about you. It is about the kids. Burke County gets mad when they cannot control everyone and everything. Did everyone really think that accountability would never take place??? Sorry, it's called seed time and harvest according to the Word of God. Start walking in Love and quit bashing others just because you are mad that people got caught

Anonymous said...

What are you talking about? Buff and Norman are the ones controling everything! Like Mr. Wilkerson and Mr. Bruce Hawkins said, it's unprecidented that a Board would reject two straight recommendations from Mr. Burleson. I've heard for the last 1 1/2 months that Mr. Kinney was Tim Buff's choice. So that sounds like a fix is on to me.

Anonymous said...

It isn't about NOT supporting Mr. Kinney, it'a about supporting Doug and Rexanna, BOTH of whom have served this county, our schools and our kids without promoting thier own self interests or the interests of persoanl friends(ie-by giving them coveted positions) above what is best for the schools they have run. I have e-mailed two Board members and asked them directly to give me justification for choosing a candidate that is clearly less qualified than the first two that Mr. Burleson reccommended. Guess what? Not one responded. Walking in love doesn't mean blindly following someone down a path of injustice and deceit. I'm afraid we are going to lose two GOOD principals as a result of this fiasco. Surely Mr.Kinney can appreciate the support parents and community members are showing his colleagues.

I would like to respond to the comment above this one....I am sure there are some great English/Grammer classes at WPCC...I would STRONGLY suggest that you check into one of those so the next time you want to make a comment you will at least know how to SPELL :) Must be a relative of Tracy's!!!

Superintendent: Sheriff Investigated; Sheriff: No I Didn't

By Adam Shull
ashull@morganton.com
Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Morganton - Burke's school superintendent and sheriff have differing accounts about whether an investigation was conducted into locker-room thefts and a hidden-camera video made by students at East Burke High.
Burke's Board of Education voted to exonerate a coach of any wrongdoing in the matter, citing in part a local law enforcement investigation.

Sheriff John T. McDevitt says his office has not investigated.

East Burke High School students made the video on Nov. 29 in hopes of catching someone taking money from student clothing, says Superintendent of Burke County Public Schools David Burleson.

Burleson and East Burke Principal Rexanna Lowman say a hidden video camera captured head basketball coach Billy Anderson on tape, alone, patting down student clothes. Burleson says the tape was turned over to a school resource officer employed by the sheriff's office. He also says the sheriff's office was requested to conduct an investigation to determine whether a crime was committed.

"The Burke County Sheriff's Department kept the videotape for several weeks, and to my knowledge conducted what it deemed to be an appropriate investigation," Burleson wrote in an e-mail.

He says the sheriff's office reported back to Burke schools that no evidence of a crime had been found.

McDevitt says no deputies in his office have watched the video. "We've had no report from any victim regarding any larceny of money associated with a video at East Burke's locker room," he says.

McDevitt says that without a report, his office has no reason to investigate an incident.

Burleson says his office is still investigating any leads in the case to make sure the school system is fully investigating the matter. The school board has not watched the video as a group, says Chairman Ray Martinat. He says he believes at least one board member has watched the video

If i am not mistaken Adam Shull had it wrong in that article. Someone correct me, if I am wrong.

OK. So we are wanting a "new investigation" of the East Burke Locker Room crimes. Only thing is, no teacher committed a crime. The video, I'm told, could not reveal any hint of theft. What the video did reveal was that a video was made in a locker room - a room assumed by any reasonable person to be private. The law is clear: Having a camera in a bath or locker room is a misdemeanor, Having a WORKING camera in such an area is a felony. Showing the video to ANYONE is an additional felony. Making a copy of the video is yet ANOTHER felony. Any child or adult caught on tape and the tape is shown without their knowledge or consent becomes a civil crime with the video operators becoming liable for the victims' actual and punitive damages and attorney's fees.

And if a child is caught undressing on that video, my retired vice cop buddy tells me that child pornoghaphy charges can be brought against the two young camera operators.

The two moviemakers committed the real crime, and we lost a good teacher and coach because of them. Buff and Company, I'm told, still praise these boys as heroes.

It's not too late for these "heroes" to be taken to court. Maybe Tracy's kid can give them some pointers...

Anonymous said...

Wow. That's it...that is your argument for why it was ok for Coach Billy to go through student's pockets? And that is your answer to why it was ok for his daddy and daddy in law to be a part of the very "internal investigation" ? All the admin had to do was file a complaint and allow an independent investigation. I guess folks just don't like the appearance of a cover up. Read Adam's story again. Maybe the guy didn't do it. We will never know. My guess is, had it been handled correctly....the election would have been much different. And, our community would have peace.

I wish someone would try to charge these kid's where a judge can reopen everything and get to the reason david burleson covered his own rear. Hugh Blackwell and Sam Aycock covered this thing up to make it go away. They both cant even wear a shirt of tracys lawyer Robert Elliot.

Anonymous said...

I don't know about that. What kind of shirts does he wear?

The state of NC gives teachers and admministrators the right to search private belongings of students when attempting to retrieve stolen property or illegal contraband(stuff, Tracy). As a teacher, I know I have done the same thing many times. Since nothing was reported stolen on the day of the infamous video, what crime was committed? Just another instance of the terrible twosome tying to get rid of someone they did not like-or in this case, the son of someone they did not like. Interesting that making a copy of this video as wellas showing the video are both felonies. Wonder who that would be???

Tim Buff said Monday night to "put your money where your mouth is!!!"
I say we organize a community calling campaign. (Keep his phone ringing off the hook.) Maybe we could start calling the store too, and maybe we can call Tri-County while they are having lunch! Sounds like a plan... Who's with me?

Anonymous said...

Did you notice how Barnard responded that he has two bachelors degrees and ignored the part about BCPS employment? I'd like to know how he was terminated. (If you listened to or were at the board meeting Monday night... You'll understand this next comment) I'm imagining someone saying Dave, sorry man, kids are breaking their noses on the desks from falling asleep because you're so boring. We're going to have to let you go.
Can you imagine sitting in class listening to such a bore of a human being? He drives me insane! We need to be identifying members of the community who will be willing to run and replace these jokers.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the "calling campaign". After all, Mr. Buff did say that his phone number and email address were public knowledge and he did solicit contact...Be careful what you ask for, Mr. Buff

Anonymous said...

The "calling campaign" is a great idea. We also need to form a group and have meetings to determine who the next candidates for the board will be. The sooner we get started, the better off we will be in upcoming elections. I would also like to say that I'm very concerned about people saying this is a Valdese clique mad about not getting their way. Doug Rhoney is from George Hildebran and currently lives in Hildebran. People all over the Eastern end of the county are upset. It's much more widespread than Valdese.

Anonymous said...

Just a note....there is a community meeting in the works...more information to follow

Anonymous said...

That's great about the community meeting! Those of us who stand strong against this group can help do our part and educate the community as well. So many people just aren't paying attention and don't truly know the intentions of this board.

Anonymous said...

A huge campaign also needs to be orchestrated for the Register of Deeds race. It would be a great time to vote down a Cooper.

Anonymous said...

Vote out Libby Cooper will be a hard sale. People there is something you should know The board under general statute can changr the name of a school anytime. If you want to organize a community watch dog grroup you have the right. But some people are going to ask the names of the high schools be changed and should. I cant believe that this many people are so pissed about a principal but will not stand against the old board for naming the schools, hypocrite's in my eyes are these people. As for getting people to run anyone can run for board of education and it would be unconstitutional to say they dont have education so they can not run aclu lawyers would eat it that up. If valdese wants a new principal the county wants new names on the schools bottom line.

If Tim AND TRACY WERE REMOVED FROM BCPS THE MAJORITY OF THE BOARD WOULD APPOINT THEIR REPLACEMENTS THAT MEANS DAVE ROB AND KAREN WOULD APPOINT THOSE TWO SEATS AND NOTHING COULS STOP THEM.SAM WAS APPOINTED WHEN HE FIRST MADE THE BOARD IN EXIT OF ERNEST STONE. DO WE WANT THOSE THREE TO PICK REPLACEMENTS? BUT AFTER CHECKING IN RALIEGH THEY COULD ITS SAD ALL THE WAY FOR 4 YEARS

I have a really huge problem with a proposal by Mr. Hairfield. He proposed that there be a change in policy that punishes athletes whom have committed a felony to also include misdemeanors. A misd. can include a huge list of offenses from traffic violations (ahem ms. Norman) all the way down to shoplifting. They want to punish by penalizing an athlete if they have been CHARGED, yes charged with a misdemeanor. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? He has proposed a NO EXCEPTIONS policy that will make them ineligible to play. Yeah you think the dropout rate is high now! How about explaining to a kid that they cant play bball because they got a speeding ticket? And one more point of irony, Mr. Hairfield recieved 2 DUI's (looks like he got a nice second chance) and Ms. Norman and son have racked up a few misdemeanors here lately. So, are these two board members going to step down from their positions and lead by example since they are so concerned with good role models in schools? Oh and one more thing, why just target athletes? Hmm is this a form of discrimination or just a prelude of what is to come. Perhaps we should sit in judgement and refuse an education on the grounds that little Johnny had a minor screw up and now needs to wear that scarlett letter. Wake up you bunch of self rightous morans on the BOE. Look in the mirror before you go after a kid for a bad decision. Let the parents and the law handle what doesn't concern the PUBLIC school system!!

Anonymous said...

The fact that a hidden video camera is allowed in a locker room is disgraceful. Does anyone in Burke county not believe that this is an ISSUE. For Tim Buff to allow a video and praise this is outrageous!!! Maybe we should refer to this as a PEEPING TIM.

To February 9,11:33 AM:

So you are insisting the new schools undergo a name change -"bottom line". What an evil demand!

The Pattons and Draughns are icons in the field of education. But you wouldn't understand what I'm talking about. You evidently do not know anything about those two families. How could you? You have been programmed by Buff and Company to like only words you can
look up in a dictionary. Simple words. Words without any soul.

God forbid that you would have to do any kind of research to learn about great local people.

Bottom line. I pity you.

As a concerned parent and educator, I am asking "Glen" to please consider removing skoolbored.blogspot. Now that the site has been publicized in the paper, children across this county and others will have access to all of the comments on this board; vulgar language, slanderous remarks, disrespect, etc... I assure you this will spill over into the classrooms for teachers and administrators to deal with. In the interest of our children, let's cease and desist.

Anonymous said...

As for the comment about the school names yes I know the gentlemen's history. Why was a national figure like Sam J Ervin not chosen. You bash the new board but I have never seen a rush put on anything like naming the schools.Bill Simmons called from Germany to cast a vote to break a tie.do you think it could not have waited until the next meeting? No since Patton has already bought jerseys and such, the schools should not be renamed. It is a dead issue just as the naming of the principal at Draughn. I have a Bachelor of arts degree from Unc-Chapel Hill and am working on my Master's. Im am quite educated and do not need idiots like you forming an opinion for me!

To the concerned parent/educator-Maybe it should be up to the parents to monitor their child if they feel the content of this blog is not appropriate for him/her. I assure you children hear much worse from their peers.

Anonymous said...

In response to the parent/educator: If parents are this concerned about children looking at this blog, just block the site. Everyone has a right to their opinion, and we bloggers are expressing ours. Trust me, there are worse things on the internet than a local blog.

Mr. Barnard...please elaborate on your transfer to the Alternative School from Table Rock Middle School....when did you get your teaching license? Being a bad substitute doesnt qualify you as an experienced educator. You had no classroom management and talked to the kids as if you were a teenager....that doesn't get too much respect.

Quit crying about spilled milk Lowman didn't get the job becuase she tried to coverup a big wrong. Burleson is guilty too. I thank he's way over paid. He needs to work for a living sweat a little. Good Job Mr. Buff it's not all about Valdese Drexel and RC kids will go there too. Big mistake for naming a school after someone
