I wish you the best, Mike. You're going to need it working for this group!?!?!?

I too wish you the best, Mike! Unfortunately because of the actions of 5 of the school board members, you have a lot of things going against you. Stand strong and show everybody you are not as easily manipulated as these 5 members seem to think you are!

Given the response by the community, if I were Mike Kenney I would decline the offer. What a slap in the face to these board members that would be.

To Anonymous #3 (who wrote at 2:29 PM): I agree and thought the same thing...the only difference being is that if I were one of the rejected-but-shouldn't-feel-slighted candidates, I'd start looking for work in another school district immediately. Here are a few questions I have:

-What was the criteria compared among all the candidates? Does anyone have a list? Surely to goodness this isn't CIA-sensitive material.
-Why aren't any damn school board policies found on the web? If they are somewhere online, could someone write the page on here? I would think the school board and its lawyer would want them for all to see.

I agree....Mike Kenney should decline this offer.I am sure Mike Kinney is a decent man..so I hope that he does the decent thing and DECLINES this offer.
DECLINE THE OFFER, MIKE
DECLINE THE OFFER, MIKE
DECLINE THE OFFER, MIKE............

The guidelines have been posted here before, looks like a tough read.

I agree with the comment suggesting that Mr. Kenney decline the offer. Now wouldn't that put the board in its place? As I read the newspaper this morning, I found it curious Tim Buff stated that interviews should from this day forward be conducted by the superintendent and his staff. Wait a minute, wasn't it Mr. Buff that wanted a community interview committee, and isn't it Mr. Buff who has voted down two recomendations of Mr. Burleson? Am I to assume that Mr. Buff is a LIAR of just confused?

Anonymous said...

I do not know this new principal, but I believe he has sold his soul to the devil, metaphorically speaking. I think what incensed me the most were Mr. Buff's comments about the "public" knowing about Doug and Rexanna's names in Jan. and the fact that not everyone in the community supported Doug. If Mr.Buff really did know this community, he would know that Doug and Rexanna's names were mentioned over a year ago as possible principals for Draughn High because they exhibit such integrity, competence, honesty, and breed an atmosphere of respect and diligent hard work. As for "the community" not supporting Doug, I would like to know how many people he is actually talking about. To hear a negative comment from 1 or 2 or even 10 people out of a community of thousands is hardly respecting the wishes of the community. Maybe some people believe that this community is prone to gifts of telepathy, but here is my next prediction: Andy Hodges will be named basketball coach at Draughn, if not AD. Folks, it's not magic or supernatural powers. Everybody in "the community" knows it will happen as sure as we knew Mike Kenney was going to be named. I'm tired of Ms. Norman acting like a martyr saying she is doing the right thing, not the easy thing. Actions speak louder than words, Ms. Norman and it's time you started doing the right thing.

1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

6"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces."
Matthew 7:1-6

"1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?"
Romans 2:1-3

I think it is time we have a "Community Meeting"....a meeting where Tim Buff cannot dictate when a person may speak and what they may speak about...Then we will see just how many people in our community support Mr. Rhoney and Mrs. Lowman. It is time we bring in the TV media to investigate what is happening in our community. It is time we contact our State Representatives and State Board of Education!! It is time for the community to stand together and not allow Tim and Tracy to be make Draugh High one of their "puppet schools." Someone needs to investigate how two very qualified principals were turned down and an ASSISTANT principal was named instead. Something is VERY WRONG with this picture!!!!

Citing the Bible phrases listed are true if it were not for the FACTS everyone is referring to...

Mike IS a good person, but he won't decline the job. It's a raise in pay for him and consequently a big boost for his retirement. Tim and Tracy and their three co-stooges know exactly what they are doing. They are paying off campaign debt to Kristie Hodges, Chip Cooper, and Libby Cooper for delivering the support of the Democrats on election day. They are paying off that debt on the backs of the Draughn Community - the only community, ironically, that did NOT support Buff and his buffoons.

Securing Andy Hodges a head basketball position has been the motive for this mess all along. Will the Draughn community sit back and take it? We're riled up now, but how will we feel a week or a month or a year from now? When Kristie and Chip move from EBHS over to Draughn - and you know they will - won't that be a real slap in the face?

I think Burke County needs a new Register of Deeds.

Anonymous said...

I think Draughn parents should send Buff a message he will understand. Just don't buy from his "fruit stand" or any retailer he wholesales to.

And to the scripture quoter, I will say this: No one will escape God's judgement, and no one will escape the truth. Not me and not you. But Jesus had a word for those who hid behind their religiosity and their knowledge of the Torah yet refused ministry to the poor and powerless. He called them a brood of vipers.

God knows our hearts. Mine is aching. It is aching for justice -something the Draughn community and its students have now been denied. I say that sooner or later these kids will exact severe punishment on those who have shortchanged them.

"What society does for children so too will children do for society."

In reference to the scripture found in Matthew 7, read on. Versus 16 thru 20 speak to knowing people by the fruit they bear. The only fruit this bunch is bearing is sour grapes. That's not judging, that's fruit inspecting. As far as Mike Kenney goes, what type of individual would willfully partipate in the undermining of fellow colleagues and then think that they're fit to run a high school with a 1,000 teenagers in it. What an example for the kids to follow. The Hodges and the Coopers are all over this. They've told staff at EBHS for weeks that Mike was going to be named principal. I don't know why Mrs. Norman was so upset that someone in the audience knew of Mike's position on the interview committee's list. If she didn't know she should have asked Kristy when she was on the phone with her during the course of their many conversations. As far as doing the right thing... this bunch wouldn't recognize right thing if the Holy Spirit were holding up a sign giving step by step instructions!

Anonymous said...

I don't know Mr.Kenney but I do know Rexanna and Doug. We missed a incredible opportunity to get Draughn off to a great start. Ms. Norman It doesn't matter how people found out about the list that is not an issue. The issue is the least qualified individual got the job. Mr. Burleson grow some "nads" you have the ability to move personal at your discretion without board approval. The word needs to get out that the Cooper's and the Hodge's are behind this farse. We need to keep the pressure on. What happened to doing whats right for the kids?

Anonymous said...

There's a Fool Board meeting tonight at six. That bunch needs to hear from those who were told to go back to work and do their jobs. They need to hear from those who wanted Draughn to be the best high school in Burke County and NC. They need to hear from those who will not allow the Coopers and Hodges and the Five Slamma Jamma to run that school into the ground before it opens. They need to hear from US until things change for the better!!

Anonymous said...

It's tragic that the board chose not to choose one of the two most qualified applicants for this job. I guess getting Andy a job coaching basketball is more important than the students' educations. We all know that sports are more important than academics and a well-run school. You know, Burke County is famous for all the basketball stars we've sent to the NBA.

Hey Tracy, don't worry about who "leaked" the info. You probably shared one of your secret tapes with some friends again.

What really terrifies me is that the actions of the school board are going to keep quality educators from staying in the county and from coming to this county. But, hey, Draugh will have a basketball coach. That's all you need . . .

Tim, I agree with that earlier post. I'm going to buy all my fruit at Food Lion.

Anonymous said...

I imagine the "leaks" came from the same person who gave confidential information from personnel files to the newspaper editor and who illegially taped and played the closed session tape to her friends. Funny how these things just keep happening!

Anonymous said...

I just listened to tonight's board meeting. Thanks to the speaker who pointed out how disrespectful the board has been to D.B. We should also point out how disrespectful the the board has been to the teachers of Burke County. Are T-N-T still reading personnel files? Are these two uneducated individuals still telling veteran educators how to do their jobs? When T. Norman told Ms. Church to do her job and teach the children, did she stop to think that these fine educators were having a difficult time doaid jobs because of a lack of support from the school board? If they truly care about educating our children, why are they creating an atmosphere of distrust, disunity, and choas in the community and school system? Teacher and student morale are being affected by the actions of the board. I am disgusted.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if any school board member, other than Sam and Buddy, could list any component of the job description of a high school principal? I guess the only criteria is whether the candidate campaigned for these losers. What a shame the Draughn community is the one who wil suffer.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Long-Winded Board Member,

Did you just discover powerpoint?
How dare you tell a community member that he is "out of his mind!" Yes, students do drop out of school in Burke County, but don't put all the blame on the schools. Ask their parents what they and their children are doing for the 16 hours a day that the teachers don't have their children. If you want students to stay in school, put some of the impetus on the parents. The teachers can't fix the parents who are drug addicts or alcoholics. (I guess that one cuts a bit close for you doesn't it?" The schools can't fix poverty. The schools can't make parents who were dropouts encourage their kids to go beyond their own educational limits. If "it takes a village to raise a child," remember that the sole responsibility of rearing and educating children should not fall only on the shoulders of the educational system . . . even though the only parenting many students get is from their teachers. As the one speaker asked, "Where are the parents?"

Thank you Sam for standing up to Buff over that knowledge that he is supposedly privy too. Those implications are potentially detrimental to the applicants' reputations. Buff perhaps should think about all the knowledge that we, the people, are privy to about him and his grocery clerk girlfriend. Do they both have a standing dinner date with the Hodges and the Coopers?

Anonymous said...

Blake Norman's court date is 2/11/08...come and watch!!!

The message that you, the Board, is sending to Mr Burleson is this:

- we don't trust or value what you are saying,
- we will not follow through with what you suggest, and
- we don't think you're capable of...

If you did, then WHY ON EARTH would you not listen to him?

And, if you indeed 'work for free' as you say, then how are you (as volunteers) specific experts on personnel issues?

Of course, Catawba County Schools is better in a lot of ways than Burke County! Charlotte-Meck is too! Oh, and since we've lost at least 2 classified employees in the last few months to Newton-Conover, by god, we'd better take them into account too - they can't get off scot-free! But what did you base your statement on - why do you think that? Since you brought it up, one instance that they are better at is the rate of pay for classified employees. Start by giving pay and supplements for classified folks the same as they do.

Mr. Wilkinson, great job in calling down Mr Buff. He certainly DID imply that you all had information that we don't know about.

Do you think, board members, we can teach you all to sing in perfect harmony? But wait, that's a middle school tune. You'll all be drop-outs before the song is over.

brn4 In your anger do not sin;
when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent.
Selah

5 Offer right sacrifices
and trust in the LORD.

6 Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?"
Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.

7 You have filled my heart with greater joy
than when their grain and new wine abound.

8 I will lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, O LORD,
make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:4-8

A psalm of David.
1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy hill?
2 He whose walk is blameless
and who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from his heart

3 and has no slander on his tongue,
who does his neighbor no wrong
and casts no slur on his fellowman,

4 who despises a vile man
but honors those who fear the LORD,
who keeps his oath
even when it hurts,

5 who lends his money without usury
and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things
will never be shaken.
Psalm 15

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;
2 in you I trust, O my God.
Do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.

3 No one whose hope is in you
will ever be put to shame,
but they will be put to shame
who are treacherous without excuse.

4 Show me your ways, O LORD,
teach me your paths;

5 guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.

6 Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.

7 Remember not the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you are good, O LORD.

8 Good and upright is the LORD;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

9 He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them his way.

10 All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful
for those who keep the demands of his covenant.

11 For the sake of your name, O LORD,
forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

12 Who, then, is the man that fears the LORD ?
He will instruct him in the way chosen for him.

13 He will spend his days in prosperity,
and his descendants will inherit the land.

14 The LORD confides in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known to them.

15 My eyes are ever on the LORD,
for only he will release my feet from the snare.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.

17 The troubles of my heart have multiplied;
free me from my anguish.

18 Look upon my affliction and my distress
and take away all my sins.

19 See how my enemies have increased
and how fiercely they hate me!

20 Guard my life and rescue me;
let me not be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.

21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope is in you.
Psalm 25

Maybe you should read the job decription for the princple at DHS. Mr Burleson and Demitor wrote the job decription. It stated that the principal had to be in the high school setting since the year 2000. I don't think Mr. Burleson told everone that that wes in the job decripition.
The last school board did not listen. Sam made the motion to name the school DHS. Tim and Tracey were the ones that stood up for the children and the people in this community or have you forgot.
Hey Burleson what about the daycare money Patton used for a trip to NY and to bring a speaker from Calf? I ahve heard around 2
$25000.00 was used. Why did you have to use other monies to pay the daycare workers. Some of the daycare workers did not get paid because of misuse of daycare money. Is'nt daycare money a federal fund only to be used for daycare use? Yes according to this US Official. I heard that a US official has a copy of the material now.
Have Fun

I was wondering since everyone is on the staight and narrow why does the community's students not have their own issued text books? So where are the textbooks? Where is the money that was to be used to supply textbooks?
115C.96. Powers and duties of the State Board of Education in regard to textbooks.
The children of the public elementary and secondary schools of the State shall be provided with free basic textbooks within the appropriation of the General Assembly for that purpose. To implement this directive, the State Board of Education shall evaluate annually the amount of money necessary to provide textbooks based on the actual cost and availability of textbooks and shall request sufficient appropriations from the General Assembly. The State Board of Education shall administer a fund and establish rules and regulations necessary to:
(1) Acquire by contract such basic textbooks as are or may be on the adopted list of the State of North Carolina which the Board finds necessary to meet the needs of the State public school system and to carry out the provisions of this Part.
(2) Provide a system of distribution of these textbooks and distribute the books that are provided without using any depository or warehouse facilities other than those operated by the State Board of Education.
(3) Provide for the free use, with proper care and return, of elementary and secondary basic textbooks

ps Gongrats Mike

As to the question of textbooks, why don't we get Bernard to check his manual and see who is in charge of that! According to him, our local school board is in charge of EVERYTHING so it has to be the boards fault if there are not enough textbooks.

Who wants to place a bet that the anonymous person who wrote at 4:09 is either Tim or Tracy? Or someone who's riding "The Buff Train" -
(huh! a Cooper maybe?)

If there's a way to get these idiots removed from their seats - please find it.

The community voted you in because you said you were for the people and what's best for our children. We haven't seen that yet!!!! I hope you enjoy your board membership, I have a feeling it will be your last.

I think the Hodges and the Coopers should be ashamed of themselves. For them the put themselves above what's best for the students that will attend Draughn is beyond shameful.

If Andy Hodges is that childish - I would not want him to coach my child. GROW UP!!!!

I agree this bunch needs to be out of office....since there is only 5 minutes to speak at the board meeting with King Buff and the timer...I feel it is time we have a community meeting...with TV media and all...its time we expose this bunch to the folks in Raleigh!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with the comment above. Tim and his Buff-oons are riding out the initial wave of critcism expecting it to go away in a week or two. He is so afraid of "the people" he represents, he feels he needs police protection.

But we cannot let up. We knew they would soon start to implode, but we cannot let this local Taliban regroup. Keep the letters to the editor and the blogs flowing. Their true natures are about to surface. Even Tim "Jim Jones" Buff has his breaking point.

I agree with the person who posted about Barnard saying the board is in charge of everything. Since the board knows more than the educators and administrators in our system, maybe they should just teach the classes. Oh, wait, some of them aren't even close to being qualified, and one seems to even have been "let go" by BCPS. Interesting to say the least.

Anonymous said...

Well let's see if you are going to orchestrate a tv show maybe the soon to be exited lawyer will help you avoid getting slammed in court. I love it because people have tolerated so much crap its pothetic. This board has done one wrong thing and lets crucify them but the old board walked on water. Maybe that why they got fucked on election day and it will get worse next election.

For people who do not know parlimentary procedure a chairman of any board can limit the speaking to 3 minutes or 5. Look it up dumbfucks. Second Sam and Buddy are now for the peoplt hte fucked the past couple of years?Third sam was trying to be slick to get tim to talk about personel issues. Why did he not want to talk about Billy Anderson in open session?

Whoa! 12:51 and 1:01, from the vocabulary, seemed to be the same person. I don't suppose he has a court date today? And one scheduled for next week as well?

These are typical responses from Tim-and-Tracy allies. Their language skills are about the same, too.

As a concerned parent and educator, I am asking "Glen" to please consider removing skoolbored.blogspot. Now that the site has been publicized in the paper, children across this county and others will have access to all of the comments on this board; vulgar language, slanderous remarks, disrespect, etc... I assure you this will spill over into the classrooms for teachers and administrators to deal with. In the interest of our children, let's cease and desist.

re: 6:10p
Your statements are a bunch of BS. What makes you think David would want to leave if someone did try to lure him away, as you phrased it. Sometimes you stay where your family, friends and loved one are, money isn't everything to some. You know about as much as what's going to happen in December as I do. You are so full of it....this new board is the ones who had better watch out. As soon as they are up for re-election, they're HISTORY! Everyone in Burke County knows now that they are the laughing stock of the county. All you have to do is read this blog or listen to what people have to say about the ones they voted for and won't make the same mistake again. They best run for the hills...course Tim and his beloved have to salvage store to fall back on. They'll be OK and the rest, except for Rob, have an education and can get a job at least. They better enjoy it while it lasts. Time is running out......

Here ya go.... pretty impressive, uh? Got yours ready? Let's see what you got wizard...

Superintendent David C. Burleson welcomes you to the Burke County Public School System and the system’s website. Mr. Burleson leads the 2,500 plus school system employees as a strong proponent of each student’s worth and as an innovator in exploring a variety of opportunities to reach each student’s potential. Working diligently with all staff, he sustains attention to the components of successful schools – curriculum, school organization, educational philosophies, instructional practices, family and community involvement. He recognizes all of the above as powerful tools in unleashing the power for student success.

A graduate of Appalachian State University with an EDS. in Administration, Mr. Burleson, an Avery County native, high school valedictorian and Magna Cum Laude honoree, came to Burke County in l982 where he began his career at Freedom High School as a math teacher and coach. He served as assistant principal of that school from l989 through 1991 until becoming the principal of what was then Oak Hill Junior High School. He returned to Freedom as principal in l992 and remained in this capacity until moving into the associate superintendent’s position in l996. Mr. Burleson became superintendent in 2000 and has been a pioneer in education from pre-k to grade twelve and beyond. Under his leadership, the school system recently was awarded the prestigious National Magna Award of Excellence for its pre-k mobile education on wheels. His unparalleled list of accomplishments include the following: helped develop the Burke County Public Schools Drug Policy, developed the first PTO at Freedom High School, created summer camps for students, procured millions of dollars in grant monies to address student need/creative programming, and realized alternative educational programs for those who need a different approach to education. Also, during Mr. Burleson’s tenure as superintendent, the county has experienced the lowest drop-out rate in the public school system’s history.

Professionally, he has received local, regional and state Principal of the Year Awards, Burke County Educational Office Personnel Administrator of the Year Awards for four years, 2001 North Carolina Middle School Association Superintendent of the Year Award as well as acknowledgement for several published articles and innovative presentations.

Very active in church and in community affairs, David has a litany of volunteer and leadership accolades including church member, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and active participant in the Morganton Rotary Club, Tar Heel Association of Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Burke County Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the North Carolina Standards Board as well as serving on several local community boards and committees for a better Burke County. He has a broad spectrum of other interests which mainly involve being a Civil War enthusiast and spending time with his wife, Beth and two children, Heather and Shannon.
